NICHE PISTON

An ATV piston is a component of engines, pumps, and gas compressors. It is located in a cylinder and is made gas-tight by piston rings. In an engine, its purpose is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft through a piston rod and or connecting rod

Piston Anatomy

A piston is a cylindrical engine component that slides back and forth in the cylinder bore by forces produced during the combustion process. The piston acts as a movable end of the combustion chamber. The stationary end of the combustion chamber is the cylinder head.

Piston Components

ATV Piston components include the piston head, piston pin bore, piston pin, skirt, ring grooves, ring lands, and piston rings. The piston head is the top surface of the piston which is subjected to tremendous forces and heat during normal engine operation

NICHE GASKET

A gasket is a mechanical seal which fills the space between two or more mating surfaces, generally to prevent leakage from or into the joined objects while under compression.

Some Types of Gaskets:

  • Head gaskets create a seal between the engine block and cylinder head. This seal establishes a proper compression and prevents fluid leaks into the cylinders
  • Base gaskets create a seal between the top-end of your engine and the engine cases. Stop pesky engine oil leaks before they cause permanent damage to your engine.
  • The valve cover is sealed to the upper section of the engine cylinder head by a valve cover gasket. As it passes around the camshafts, rockers, and valves, the gasket stops engine oil from seeping out.

As the other reviews state, the head gasket blew causing engine gasses to enter the coolant system. I utilized the niche head gasket the first time, and blew the head gasket. Utilized a yamaha gasket the second time. Blew the head gasket within 5km. The 3rd time apart I found that the sleeve had slid down into the jug by 0.009" (see picture). I brought the niche jug to a machine shop and they machined it down 0.011" to get it true, i did my head at the same time. Installed with yamaha gaskets, seems to be running fine now with about 50km on it. I will update later when I have more time on the grizzly.I've had good luck with niche parts in the past, so disappointed that the Q/C was missed on such a simple step.I would have given a 1 star but in the sellers defense, I reached out to them about a year after I purchased the rebuild kit (as i didn't tackle the rebuild until a few months after it blew) they were still willing to give me a refund. I was surprised and impressed.

Installed on 2003 660 grizzly. Ran 5 minutes before sleeve dropped and caused head gasket water leak. Stay away from this. So many reviews just like mine

I purchased this kit and installed it. Started it a few times while I worked on other things. Continually started and ran worse. Then I noticed it smoking white. Shut it off and tried again the next day. Combustion chamber was hydrolocked with coolant. Removed the head and discovered the sleeve was lower than the mating surface of deck. I’m pretty sure it slid down. Contacted the manufacturer and they gave me a full refund, but what a waste of time. They even told me that a new one could possibly have the same result.

Had to replace head gasket after 30 minutes of use. Didn't come with head bolts, being a kit.

First time installing one of these kits, all I had was my trusty Clymer manual and tools. Needless to say everything went well and hear I am a few weeks later, ripping around on the rebuilt Rappy!!! Thanks!

The piston felt tight in the cylinder did not move up and down smooth and one of the cylinder bolts snapped on me I had to reuse my oem bolts and when I got it all together it ran good for 30 min then the head gasket starting to leak oil I knew I should’ve return this product before installing once I saw the gaskets it was a done deal the gaskets where so thin my notebook paper is thicker then their gaskets just buy oem trust you will thank me later

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY! This is junk. It didn't even make it out of the garage before it blew a head gasket. Thinking it could have been the gasket cause it looked cheap. I tried an oem gasket with a stud kit. It blew that gasket within 20 minutes! The sleave moved allowing it to put compression into the water jackets of the cylinder. I tried to contact the seller and discuss their defective product, they would not even attempt to get back to me. If it allowed to give zero stars I would have!!
