I've kept my old Montgomery Wards lawn tractor (made by MTD) alive far past its expiration date. On mine, the throttle cable started to bind, which put stress on the plastic control box housing. Eventually the box broke and I thought I'd be out of luck. Nobody makes parts for this old pile of junk anymore, right?Wrong. Turns out, lots of parts, from belts to blades to carburetors are available inexpensively. That's the nice thing about owning a cookie-cutter tractor that used the same parts as a million others.For $35 when I bought it (the price has gone down to $30 as of late 2024), I got a new throttle box, lever, and cable. I was able to throw out all the worn junk and start over with fresh parts, which fixed the throttle cable issue. If this one lasts as long as the last one, I'll never touch it again.

The unit came in pieces, as expected, but no instructions for the thin plastic washer location. It woks and the unit is very tight and a bit restrictive moving the throttle lever.

This control box was identical to the original on my tiller except it has an upgraded handle shaft that is metal instead of plastic. This is great because my original part broke off just above the pivot point. The original was plastic and kind of thin. The new throttle has a metal shaft with a plastic center pivot and plastic handle. It seems to be a much more durable design. I also like that where the control cable fits into the handle shaft is metal. The cable attachment point on the original was plastic and showed a good amount of wear and would have eventually failed also. Be careful putting the new control box together!! The body is still plastic and has several small plastic pins that snap firmly into the opposite side. These are an important part of holding the two sides together - the two screws alone don't do it. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING LINED UP BEFORE YOU START PRESSING THINGS TOGETHER! These DO NOT seem to be designed to come apart again without breaking. I used a couple of very small clamps to gently and evenly press the two sides together. A helper would be ideal but I was able to put this together by myself with some difficulty. I took a hammer and flattened the new circular spring that goes on the pivot shaft. It had a lot of resistance to it and made putting the sides together difficult. Using the old spring would be an option as mine was in good condition and much flatter from years of use. It only needs to provide enough force to keep the handle from moving due to vibration. This is a good replacement part that addresses a weakness in the original just be aware there is some moderate difficulty installing it.
