From the Manufacturer

Make perfect fitting recesses and professional inlays. This easy to use inlay kit follows a 3/16-Inch thick pattern template of almost any shape to produce the recess. Create precisely matched inlays by simply removing the bushing. This solid brass inlay kit will fit your porter cable, black & decker, or any router with a manufacturer supplied adaptor for porter cable bushings. Kit includes a brass bushing, brass template guide and brass retainer nut. A 1/8-Inch downcut solid carbide spiral bit is included.

Dimensions are not correct results are bad fits. Router bit was a “left hand “ cutter.

I was pretty happy with the dimensional aspects of this kit, in that the inserts/inlays ultimately fit into the recesses outlined using the other setting (collar off). I say "ultimately" because I found it necessary to use a file on the insert to make it fit, which I had hoped would not be necessary. Still, it's much better to have the insert a trifle larger than its intended depression than vice versa. Also, the 1/8" bit seemed to lose cutting power fairly quickly after cutting only two ovals about 3" x 12" out of a South American hardwood (jatoba) only 1/8" thick. I don't remember if the bit is carbide or not. If it is, I might be able to restore it by cleaning off residue, but, even so, it did the job. For an inlay of this size, into an oak panel, I only used the bit to prepare the circumference because it is too small to remove the amount of waste necessary from the remaining site, which means that one should switch to a larger flat-bottomed bit for that purpose.

This product was a disappointment from beginning to end. First it arrived missing the butterfly templates. OK...no big deal as I don't need them. But the serious betrayal by the manufacturer lies in the cheapness of the bit. Having created my own template, I merely introduced the bit to the base material (white oak) and the bit snapped off at the haft. It is a 1/8" bit and I'm well acquainted with the fact that you have to be gentle with it, both in depth of cut and force applied. I would not recommend this product for either professionals (I suspect they know better already) or folks new to woodworking. Spend a little extra scratch and get a quality tool.

Having received the MLCS inlay kit today, I immediately inspected it. It comes in a cheap plastic envelope with a cheap plastic snap. That stuff won't last long with any use, so figure on having another storage option available at some point. There are no instructions included with the kit. If you don't already know how to use an inlay kit of this type, you'll need to get that information elsewhere.Looking at the kit, I was quite confused, because I couldn't see a bit, at first. That was due to the fact that the bit was almost fully enclosed in a collet, with only the shank sticking out. The bit, which in the description of the product is described as a 1/8" bit (1/4" Shank), is not a 1/4" shanked bit. The bit is 1/8", including the shank. There is a reducing split collet that is included, I suppose to enable you to use the bit in a 1/4" chuck. In my case, I have a 1/2" router, which already uses a reducing collet to get to 1/4" or 3/8". It doesn't seem that using another reducing collet inside a reducing collet that is inside another collet, would be a great idea.My Bosch centering pin, which is .248 on the 1/4" side, won't fit into the guide ring, which measured .240. So, I can't center the guide in my router.I didn't bother to see if it would fit on my base plate. Doing inlays is supposed to be precision work. I don't see how you can do precise work with this kit.I'm quite disappointed. I didn't expect a top-notch inlay kit, at this price point, but I have several other MLCS products that are good values (as this seemed to be) and I've yet to encounter any significant problems with their products. Sorry, but this one is going back.EDIT: 1/30/10 -- After several emails with MLCS support, they sent me a new bit that has a 1/4" shank. They've also changed the description here, to properly reflect the bit size of the kit. So, thumbs up to them for correcting the issues without undue delay. The new bit chucks fine in my 1/4" reducing collet, so if you'd rather have a 1/4" shanked bit, they have one available for the kit. The 1/8" shanked bit with the 1/4" reducing collet, should work fine in a 1/4" router. MLCS claims that this kit works fine in both 1/4" and 1/2" routers. I have no evidence to doubt their statements. Given this new info, I've changed my rating from 1 to 4 stars, because I think the kit does represent a good value. The standard centering pin not working issue seems to be common with these inlay kits. I've read of other kits not being able to use standard centering pins and during the time I was exchanging emails with MLCS, I obtained a Freud inlay kit. The Freud template guide won't work with my centering pins either. So, that's a rather moot point about the template guide with this kit.
