Dial indicators are also called dial gauges, probe, and electronic indicators. These precision instruments measure small linear distances and object sizes. The dial magnifies the measurement so that it can be easily read by the human eye. Frequently used in manufacturing, laboratories, and other industrial or mechanical fields, dial indicators are used anywhere a small measurement must be found and recorded or transferred, such as checking the variation in tolerance of a workpiece. Standard dial indicators measure the displacement along the axis of the indicator. Dial test indicators are very similar to dial indicators, except that the axis of measurement is perpendicular to the axis of the indicator. Dial and dial test indicators can be analog, with a mechanical dial, or electronic, with a digital display. Some electronic models transfer the data electronically to a computer for recording and potential manipulation.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and related systems. The company, founded in Tokyo in 1934, formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963 with headquarters in Aurora, IL.

A high quality tool with a very smooth action. I took a star off my rating because Mitutoyo does not include a plastic hard case for storage of this precision tool. My two older Mitutoyo indicators included a hard case. And my brand new Mitutoyo micrometer included a hard case.

This thing has been my every day workhorse for years and you just can't find a better value for the level of craftsmanship, accuracy, precision, and repeatability that you get from this indicator. I love the .0005 graduations, because they really allow you to read a measurement down to .0001 based on the position of the needle between the .0005 lines. You can sorta do the same on a .001 graduation indicator, but having double the resolution and graduation on this model makes it even easier, and saves me from breaking out my DTI a lot of times. I really only need my DTI when I need to measure something down to .00005 or better, which is rare.So this gage saves me a lot of time and gives me peace of mind on every job I setup that my indicator is precise and accurate and WILL NOT let me down. If it tells me I'm making good parts to spec, I've never had anyone else come back later and say any different when they use their CMM or even more precise measuring equipment to check my work.

Yes, what you'd expect in a Mity indicator. Top shelf performer at a reasonable price.Mitutoyo are a favorite target for fakes. I bought this one "sold by Amazon" and it is not a fake as many out there are.Long travel is a big plus.

I am very pleased with the quality of this product. It came with a certificate of inspection, and it is literally more than 3 times as accurate over its range of movement than its advertised allowance. The gauge has some weight to it, feels quite solid. Mitutoyo is said to be the least durable of the brands, particularly when dirt or particles get inside. However I plan on taking care of it, plus its repairable and parts are available anyway. It seems to me that if you keep the plunger shaft clean and free of oil and dirt, it shouldn't be too susceptible to getting dirt inside. Does not come with case, but that's a moot point anyway, most likely it will be in a larger case with the Mag base holder. I would not hesitate to recommend this product to a friend. Well worth the money.
