Very large and clunky. you do have to take your finger off the brake to shift up so be careful. This is not a big problem for me but still I would rather keep my finger on my brakes. Can't say this design is recommended for mountain biking but for commuting it works great.

Ok to be honest when I first got this installed, I was extremely disappointed because it was skipping like crazy and wasn't very smooth and I have done a number of shifter and derailleur installs in the past. What I ended up finding out is the cable makes a big difference. I had gone cheap and got a large bundle of no-name cable from amazon and figured I would give Shimano Optislick Shift Inner Cable a try since it was highly rated. This cable solved everything, the shifting is perfect, everything is smooth and all the indexing troubles I was having were solved. So, if you are replacing your shifter to work with your acolyte derailer change that cable to a good one.

It works like the gear indicator vs my old one. Now I know what gear I am in without looking down at the cassette. Would buy it again.

Not a good product. Plastic inner gears that are not accurate. Says 8spd. It's really a 6 speed.

Shifter works well in gear 8-3, but gear 1 and 2 don’t work well at all. The problem is not a cable issue, but rather an index issue. It downshifts fine but when you try to upshift, it will fail to switch quite often. Unfortunately this is the only choice of shifter for the acolyte derailleur so I have to deal with it. I’d appreciate a replacement in case it’s a defect, but I kind of doubt it.
