If you do indeed have a 1/4 inch valve, this is what you need. Universal is nonsense. Sure, you can use a 5/16 inch key but it will fall off the shaft - fine if you store it somewhere else, but I like mine handy.I wish they had different colors, but size matters!

The image for this item claims that it is a quarter inch gas key only. What shipped was a universal 5/16 inch *and* an 1/4 inch key. My valve stem is not long enough to fit past the 5/16 depth, it won’t catch and spins, so universal keys don’t work.

Was too small and wouldn't fit my 1/4" gas valve. After this one was returned, I ordered another similar one from a different manufacturer and it worked perfectly.

I needed a true 1/4” key for the fire pit. This is a universal key 1/4” to 5/16”. It spins around the gas valve and won’t turn it.

Most of the fireplace shut off valve keys are dual 5/16" and 1/4". This made the head a little too large to fit into my 1/4" shut off valve. Most of the valve keys offered are the dual, which won't work in my application.

Had to return. For some reason it didn’t fit the valve stem. I thought it was a uniform size.

My gas valve has a 1/4" square shaft. Most of the gas valve keys sold are "universal", where the universal keys contain a 1/4" and a 5/16" keyway. After buying a "universal" key, I do not recommend using a universal key, as it only engages the tip of the shaft. Then I bought this true 1/4" key instead. Highly recommend as this 1/4" key engages much more of the gas valve shaft.
