You will need the following tools and materials to build your mantel shelf
- 1 - 3/4" x 2" Mounting Boards (included)
- 8 - Penny Finish Nails
- Drill
- Hammer
- Pencil
- Tape Measure
STEP #1
Place the shelf on the wall above your fireplace or on the wall at the desired height. Level the shelf and draw a line on the wall at the top of the shelf. Remove the shelf and measure down 2-3/4" from the line and draw a second line on the wall parallel to the first line.
Note: Some shelf designs require the use of a square mounting board as opposed to angled. In this case, measure down from "wall mark" 3/4" to draw a second line. If you have a Commodore or Hartford shelf, you should measure down from the wall line 3.5" as opposed to 2.75" to make your 2nd wall mark.
STEP #2
The shelf mounting bracket is a long, narrow wood strip with the top lengthwise edge angled down and away from the outside edge. For some shelves such as the Bedford, Concorde, Monroe and Vail, the mounting bracket is square, not angled. Line up the bottom of the mounting bracket with the line and attach the mounting bracket to the wall in this position. Make sure mounting bracket is level. If you are mounting the bracket on a standard drywall over stud construction, make sure you attach the mounting bracket into the wood studs (2x4's) for strength. When attaching the shelf to a brick surface you must use a masonry lag bolt. Drill three holes in the mortar joints of the brick in the desired position. Insert lag and attach mounting bracket with a bolt.
STEP #3
Install shelf over mounting bracket and slide down until shelf is tight against the wall. For shelves with a square mounting bracket, push the shelf tight against the wall, with the square mounting bracket on the inside of the shelf cavity, then push down firmly on the shelf to insure that the bottom of your shelf is resting on top of the mounting bracket. When the shelf is in position, nail down through the top of the shelf into the mounting bracket, using #8 penny finish nails. You may wish to pre-drill pilot holes before nailing. You may also wish to toenail through the top of the shelf into the wall to insure a tight fit. Make sure the shelf is level before nailing

I am leaving one star because I really like the Mantel. However, the mounting of it to the wall is zero stars. The mantel I purchased is made of Oak, hollowed out and 48' long. The mounting piece that came with it is 23' long and a 1" x 1". Unless I was planning on mounting a 30lb~ piece of oak to drywall, this would not work. Studs are standard 16" from the middle, so at best I would hit 2 studs and have to mount it to the left or right of my fireplace. I went to the lumber store and bought three metal brackets to mount to the three studs in the wall and a piece of 2" x 1" plywood that was 40" long. I mounted the brackets, and mounted the plywood on top of them and then slid the mantel on and hammered finish nails to secure it to the plywood. As I mentioned, one star as I love the mantel, however I would not recommend unless you have some experience with do it yourself. I forgot to mention, the original mounting board they sent me is still inside the mantel as someone used locktight when they screwed it in and there is no way to get it out unless you saw it out. I called Electric Fireplaces Outlet Direct and they didn't return my call. I sent an email and two days later they responded saying "send pictures". By then I was finished with the whole project. Again, I wouldn't recommend unless you want a total do it yourself weekend project. Additionally, the mounting board they sent didn't have the angled ledge they keep mentioning in all the videos, it was straight, so there is no way this would have balanced on a 1"x1" mounting board even if it was the correct length.

I got the mantle in chocolate. It is a very beautiful piece, well made. I really liked it but ended up returning it. I wanted the color in the picture, a black stain. The color of the mantel was brown with red tones. There is no dark color similar to black at all. If you want to see how chocolate looks like, go to their website and browse for mantels of similar price. The company should update the pictures for chocolate. It was a pain to go to ups to drop off the heavy and long package. The return was free according to Amazon Return process.Regarding the bracket and hardware, they are included in the mantel. The bracket is the long piece of wood screwed inside the box. The mounting bracket is attached at the back of the box, parallel to the shelf. They will have the word “remove” on them. In this model the bracket is rectangular without the angle. I wish the instructions were clear about this.Edit: After reading the description, the color chocolate displays the images for the discontinued color ebony. I wish they had ebony available because it is exactly what I was looking for.

Hardware was NOT included. Instructions provided were for a number of different mantles, none of which were this model. Not a true white but the shabby chic as other reviews have said, will have to paint. Had changed my mind after I placed the order, attempted to cancel the order 2 hours after order placed, only to be told that I could not cancel. Not returning due to cost of shipping. Lesson learned.

This was heavy! It is sturdy. I had professionals install it as they need special tools to drill into tile. I'm going to add some thermal tape underneath for reinforcement as my tv was getting extremely hot without a mantle. This really helps, and looks great too.

I love the way that the mantle looks. I had it installed by a contractor while he was installing the fireplace and hanging the TV. He said that it was very easy to install. It’s very sturdy. It’s exactly what I wanted. Love, love, love it!! Would highly recommend it!

This did not come with the bracket and since I’m the second reviewer to say that out of very few, I’d say they need to step up on quality control. Thankfully my boyfriend is a carpenter and was able to get it installed and secured. That being said, the mantle is really nice. It isn’t a shiny white, more like shabby chic but goes nicely with my room. I’d recommend it, but check that you have everything before trying to install.

This mantel is extremely good quality. It’s solid wood just as advertised. It’s not really heavy and it was very easy to install. It fit snugly against the wall and didn’t tilt at all. The color is white but has more of a shabby chic white wash to it. Absolutely looks great in person.Highly recommend this vendor for a quality mantel.
