What a great item that makes fishing in walls easier! But the ball chain is very weak. The small hoop at the end broke when I was just pulling some light string with it. Nonetheless I'm happy with the product.

Ignore the bad reviews, you need one of these if you fish through walls. Yes, they EVENTUALLY will break. But I've been doing side electrical work for 12 years, and am only on my third one. These are so much more useful than a straight or non-flexible magnet, as you can curve around in a wall to get to the chain. Some tips:Do not pull hard on the chain. It will break if you pull hard. Use the chain to pull string through THEN use the string to pull wire.Do not bend the magnet sharply or repeatedly for no reason. Again, they last for years if you treat them right.Do not let the chain touch the terminals on a live outlet if you are pulling through an outlet box. Yes, I've done it.If the Chain breaks, simply tie a string to it to make it long enough. I use a surgeons knot, then tape that. Remember, you don't need much chain. It is easier to grab the very end of the chain, and MUCH easier to get the end through small holes (as opposed to pulling a loop out of the middle through). Try to have your chain hanging at about the right length to grab the end.Use your ears as you try to find the chain in a wall. You can feel or hear the magnet (or magnet handle) hit the chain. You can also feel the magnet skipping over each ball of the chain if you are pulling but the chain isn't coming.Make sure you use the correct end of the wand. They look very similar, but only one end has a magnet. I had a homeowner helping me try to catch a chain for 15 minutes due to this.I have also used the magnet to find and retrieve parts dropped in engines and the like. Strong enough to lift bolts, and the flexibility lets you get in all kinds of places (although I use an old one for the garage, so as to keep the one that touches walls clean). If you go to buy more chain, make sure it is magnetic. A lot of what is available isn't.I have taped the wand to fiberglass glow rods to get more reach inside places.Get one! Or two, in case one gets lost.

Though I'm not an electrician, I work for an electrical contractor and my journeyman co-workers were very interested in my description of this device. It's simple, and effective.I just needed to relocate a thermostat from one wall to an adjacent wall. With this device, I was able to run the cable down behind the wall, out by the floor and under the carpet, then up the opposite wall. It's that simple. It made the job much easier.I drilled a 1/2" hole at the base of the wall, dropped the metal "noodle" behind the wall, and grabbed it with the magnet. It definitely saved time and effort. That's was my goal, so the item paid for itself.I did break the noodle when I got caught on some insulation in the wall and pulled too hard. That was my fault, not theirs. It's not rated pullstring, which I should've pulled in first before attempting to pull cable.I would recommend this item to others for sure. If I can pay X amount of money and save an hour or two of fumbling and cutting walls, I'll do it every time!
