Product Description

The IDEAL INDUSTRIES INC. Vol-Con Voltage/Continuity Tester can be used for locating blown fuses, finding grounded side of line, checking continuity of cords, motors, appliances, etc., or locating excessive leakage to ground. Independent solenoid and electronic circuitry design provides back-up voltage indication for added safety. The IDEAL voltage tester features a vibration mode with indicator movement for clear and accurate testing. Bright, long-life LEDs and neon indicator lamp. IDEAL Electrical has been committed to craft and its craftsmen for more than 100 years. Whether you’re the electrical contractor or datacomm technician, production engineer or plant manager, we know the job the way you know the job.

From the Manufacturer

In 1916, J. Walter Becker started the Ideal commutator dresser company of Chicago from his mother's kitchen. He manufactured commutator dresser stones with the belief that every product should be worth more than the price paid for it. Service, he said, was part of the product. That idea has been the core Ideal business principle for over 90 years. Today, the many loyal distributors and customers that make Ideal successful are a testament to Becker's original philosophy. The Ideal 61-076 vol-con tester is an extremely rugged and reliable three-in-one tester that vibrates when a voltage is present. It tests for high voltage up to 600-Volt AC/DC and as low as 5-Volt AC/DC. It has an automatic switching continuity tester and replaceable leads with shielded probe tips. Also it has bright, long-life LED and neon indicator lamps and comes with a 5-year warranty.

The best easiest meter to use, it even comes with no contact voltage detection. I been using this meter for over 25years (Electrician)

I purchased this tester almost 45 years ago and used the same one throughout my entire career, unfortunately I misplaced it a month ago and have been unable to locate it now being close to retirement I was forced to buy another one I was hoping to have it start to finish. I was shocked it lasted so long.

While this was a good voltage/continuity tester that works as intended, I ended up returning because I didn’t realize they had removed the audible continuity feature. When I ring out conductors, I typically like to listen for a beep or a tone to indicate continuity, this tester only shows an indicator light. Aside from that, the spring loaded leads are nice and safe from accidental contact and the tester vibrates when voltage is detected.

I have used this exact tester for 26 years in the field everyday. It has not changed. No knobs or lcd screens to break if you drop it. No settings to mix up that will destroy a digital multimeter. The design is light, simple, extremely durable and small enough to carry in the tool belt yet will cover 99.9 percent of your testing needs if you take a minute and learn how to use it. It's simple look makes people think it is a cheap tester with no features. It reads 5 to 600 volts ac and DC with continuity checker. I have a nice digital tester. It stays at home. I just don't use it enough to carry around every day and it's more fragile. I have managed to partially break one with a 22 foot fall onto concrete. I still used for another 2 years or so before I finally replaced. Buy one. If you are not abusive to tools like me you will be passing it to your kids. If you are mildly psychotic and break things expect about 10 years.

Having done electrical work for years I have frequently used this model tester, it is the go to unit for professional electricians for preliminary circuit testing. The reason I bought a new one (have one in my tool case), I was out of town on a job, and my wife had a non working outlet. With no switches, dials, battery's, etc and virtually shock proof. I sent her this tester to talk her thru circuit tests, totally successful for an amateur. The other reason I chose this unit rather than a $10 tester with just an indicator light, or a $20 multimeter, was this was a 240v circuit, so needed to be sure was really 240, not just one leg. The other reason this tester is great is the somewhat archaic voltage indication. It uses an electric solenoid to move the "needle" on the scale, which draws a lot more current that a neon lamp or electronic meter, thereby not being fooled by low current leakages that would give a false positive on a "real" meter or indicator lamp. The solenoid also "buzzes" so you can "feel" the indication in a place you may not be able to look at it. And it is rugged mine is about 15 years old, somewhat battered, but going strong. Not sure if they still do, but Ideal had a lifetime warranty on their test equipment.

I have a very dependable volt ohmeter I purchased years ago which uses batteries to operate. The ohmeter has served me well down through the years but has one drawback; I must remove the batteries after each use to prevent corrosion buildup in the meter. This is because the length of time between usages would allow the batteries to leak. With this Volt-test Solenoid Voltage Tester that problem doesn't exist because the tester contains no batteries. It'll check AC or DC current up to 660 volts. It utilizes a buzzer and indicator light to signal presence of voltage. It's handy to use and when I'm done I just place it back in my tool drawer without worry of battery leakage. It's worth every penny I paid.
