Smart Frugal Demanding

I have a large, very round 15.1hh draft-type Haflinger and was seeking a pad with this billet style and dee rings to better fit and stay place on him. This certainly does that! I do use a breastplate but it is not under much tension. I put an English pad underneath and use a grippy SMX neoprene girth. However, it fits best without using the half pad piece underneath. This piece is somewhat rigid, has thin removable foam inserts, the wool cantle, and a clear curved contour to the spine. Because of this contour, it doesn’t fit my upright no-withers round boi. I really like it without, and it fits great. I’m a bit irritated to have paid for a piece I can’t use without it folding oddly at the front. It’s well-made and fabulous for horses with defined spines and withers, which I know is valuable for most. Because this also removes the wool cantle backing and leaves Velcro exposed, I have to put an English pad under it. More pictures on the Hilason website. The materials and workmanship feel mostly solid. The covering does attract hair a bit, but provides a nice level of grip. Like used suede, not super grippy like newer suede. The foam feels very nice, in all pieces. I have chronic pain and riding with just the top layer is very comfortable. The dee rings are a nice weight of metal, and the front ones seem well-attached. With not much pressure, I pulled on the center back one and it immediately ripped off. Either the fabric was weak or the sewing weakened it. While I probably wouldn’t ever use it, it’s disappointing on a 175 dollar purchase. The half pad was slightly bent during shipping and arrived with a crease in the foam. As it isn’t memory foam, it’s still a little kinky, but it can be used when girthed up and will be flat. The Velcro strips on the half pad and the top pad didn’t line up great, either. As for sizing, I ride in a 17” western/endurance saddle, 18.5ish English, curvy lower plus size with thick thighs. I’d suggest that as the max size rider for this pad. The shaping makes it accommodate much larger seat sizes than the spine measurement suggests. I don’t have much room to spare but I’m not at risk of sliding off at all with a nice buffer both front and back, though I am a well-seasoned rider who is very strong and balanced. So, am I happy with it? Is it comfortable? Is is stable/secure? Are the front dee rings and the wide billets excellent features? Absolutely! Is it exceptional? No. Is it worth the price? If you need the billet style and dee rings and padding AND have a horse with withers, yes.
