A good fit for my small head, and the brim isn't too big to obscure my face and gives good coverage against the sun.

I am not a hat person, but needed to get a hat with good coverage for a trip to an African nation. I did a lot of research and comparison before settling with the Helios Sun Hat. One of my pet peeves with hats is that it leaves my head sweaty, but this hat was fantastic as it kept me dry and cool even in +30C heat. I also have a rather large head and usually have great trouble finding a hat that isn't too snug. The large size was a little loose on my head, but the handy tightener at the back made it fit perfectly without making it look strange. The adjustable chin strap was helpful when I went bird watching in a boat so that the hat didn't fly off when the wind picked up. I'm really glad I got this hat. It will be coming with me on more adventures!

Super leichter Hut, in einem hellen Steingrau. Passt in jeden Koffer, Hut Höhe deswegen logischer weise leicht knittrig was aber nicht stört. UPF 50+. Leider muss ich ihn zurückschicken weil er mir zu groß ist. Perfekt für Umfänge ab 62cm. Klare 5 Sterne. Guter Service!

I've worn Outdoor Research hats for years. These come in a variety of shapes and colors. The Helios hats, in particular, are lightweight. The material is relatively stiff at first use, but softens over time and with laundering. The brim is adequate to protect your head and ears from sunburn, and it will shade you forehead and eyes from bright sunlight. The brim can be slightly reshaped to customize your style preferences. I'm especially happy with the material, design, and colors. I own three of these in different colors–dusk (blue), sage (Dark green), and sand (ivory) and select a color based on weather conditions and background environment. While these "Sun" hats are not rain-proof, these are good-enough under many wet conditions. The hats are slightly adjustable. Select your usual size and use the internal drawstring to tighten or loosen the fit.

En remplacment du meme modèle qui m'a fait beaucoup d'usage mais qui s'est détérioré par de nombreux lavages. Eviter les lavages en machine

I started going bald a couple years ago but I didn't really want to accept it. So, I kept telling myself it wasn't that bad and the like. But my wife always reminded me how bald I was really getting and would not let me forget it. One day, I decided to test her mettle and told her to put up or shut up...either get out her clippers and do something about my balding hair or leave me be! Needless to say, about 10 minutes later, my head was shaved...Based on not wanting skin cancer on my newly shaved head, I decided this was a great time to get a boonie type hat. I originally ordered the Khaki colored X-large OR Helios Sun Hat but that was too big for my head. Then I saw that this Sand colored Helios was on sale for about half the price. I returned the other and jumped at this one.I can honestly say that I love this hat. I served in the Army for 4 years and spent some time in Kuwait where Mil-Spec boonies were our required uniform covers. Those worked well and were very well made but were hot...they don't breathe well. This OR Helios boonie is much more comfortable in my opinion and protects just as well. The hat is very lightweight and breathable yet appears to be very durable. The materials just feel high quality. I got kinda lucky because the Large size fits my head perfectly but the micro adjustment feature is really nice as well. It allows you to tighten the hat just a bit in case it doesn't fit perfectly. And as a bonus, it floats if ever dropped into a lake, river, etc.I can't think of a Con to this hat right now. It feels good, it looks good (IMO), it protects well and it appears to be durable. A well deserving 5 star rating for this hat. If you are looking for a lighter weight, summertime boonie, I suggest giving the Helios a try.UPDATE 3/17/2018: Just wanted to say that this hat is still working awesome! It's easy to clean and has continued to perform flawlessly. Would give it 6 stars if possible.LAST UPDATE: 11/10/2019. This hat is still awesome. My son has been in Scouts for a few years now and I wear this hat on every camping trip. It's spectacular. Many of the other leaders have OR brand hats as well. If your considering a wide brimmed hat, try an OR. You will not regret it.

I've had a number of Outdoor Research products in the past and have found them to be well designed, well made, functional, and very durable. I live in the tropics and need serious sun protection when trekking, sailing, diving, and generally shlepping around in the outdoors. I've tried an number of different "boonie" and sun hats but this is exactly what I was looking for. Very light weight, wide comfortable band, wide enough brim for good sun/rain protection but not so big as to inhibit vision or become a bloody sail in a stiff breeze, infinitely adjustable and secure adjustment, well designed neck cord, excellent protection from the elements yet super lightweight, breathable, and quick drying. Oh, and it's not bad looking either ... or as stylish as this kind of hat can be. Great product from the folks at OR, I highly recommend it.

Update March 13, 2014: It's been over two years since my initial review. I'm still loving this hat and use it regularly. But there have been some times when the heat in the unventilated hat has been too much, even in the normally cool northwest area. So I finally added 6 grommets along the top rim - PROBLEM SOLVED! The grommets have made a significant difference and I like the hat even more now. See the picture with the red writing and arrows I added to the customer photo gallery. The grommets are cheap, easy to install and come in solid brass or a silver metal.I bought the hat a few weeks ago in anticipation of my trip to Puerto Vallarta. That's where I am now and I have really put the hat through its paces for almost two weeks now. I was torn betweens the Helios and the Sombriolet but I think I made the right decision. It's the most comfortable hat I've ever owned. The Large size fits my big head really well thanks to the clever adjuster on the back. The top part of the hat is a very light weight material. The brim is heavier and stiffer which is good in the windy weather. There is only minimal, almost negligible, flapping in winds of 10-15 mph and the brim provides excellent coverage. I've spent hours on the beach and in the water with the hat and have experienced zero sun burn from the neck up using only minimal sunscreen. That's the main reason I'm glad I didn't get the sombriolet with the wider, goofier looking brim. Just don't need the extra shading.OK, now for the "but". We've had temperatures here in the low to mid 90's with humidity in the 80-90% range. The hat has no venting and the material doesn't breathe very well. I tested this by pressing the hat to my lips and blowing. The air doesn't flow freely in either direction making for a sweaty, sometimes uncomfortable experience. Thankfully, like I said, it's a light material. I think these conditions are in the "extreme" category, so the hat should perform much better in more normal temperature and humidity ranges. I'm sure I will be even happier hiking with the hat back home in the great northwest.Pros:- good looking hat- very comfortable fit- lightweight- it floats- excellent adjusting mechanism- effective sunscreen protection- good value (high quality, reasonably priced}Cons:- no vents and low breathability of fabric (probably only an issue in these very hot/humid conditions}Bottom line - I like the hat very much. I would have rated a 5 except for the lack of vents. Maybe I'll modify and create my own vents in the future.Hope this review is helpful.
