Will it really hold 4500 slides? Yes it will! But you better put it where you want it before you fill it because when it is fill you need a crane to pick it up. All gathered together those little glass slides get very heavy. The cabinet is designed as a stacking device. It has tabs on the bottom so it will attach to the base. But like most of us I didn't buy the base. In that situation, go to the hardware store and purchase 3/4 inch hard rubber chair feet. You need eight. One for each corner and then one centered between them in the bottom of the cabinet. I glued them in place with super glue. This will provide a stable base for the cabinet. If you purchase the base later on you can pry them off with a flat screwdriver. The cabinet is attractive and works well but the is no space allowed between slides. You have to practice being careful not to scratch the slides when they rub against one another. I think this is a fine product. Not having the base calls for some ingenuity.
