This is a solid built mailbox. It's not indestructible, but much better than most you can buy.

Had 3 other mailboxes damaged by hooligans. This one has taken the challenged of mailbox baseball and still standing. Will have to change the wooden post instead of the mailbox. :)

I installed one of these Gibraltar heavy duty steel boxes about 5 years ago to thwart vandalism and have been satisfied. But the hinge rusted rusted out recently, and after looking at prices and reviews of other sturdy boxes, I decided to buy the same Gibraltar box again. I have a vertical 4x4 post for mounting, so I also got the Architectural Mailboxes 7540B-10 Mailbox Adapter Plate, which attaches to the bottom of this box with four thick bolts. The mounting holes in the box were slightly small for the adapter plate's bolts, so I enlarged them slightly. There were no directions for attaching the metal flag and its "stop" with the included screws, nuts, and washers. But in order, from the outside inwards, the top screw for the flag first holds a thin plastic washer, the metal flag, a thick plastic washer (fatter side in), (mailbox wall), metal washer, locknut. On the lower screw for the "stop": the skinny tubular washer, (mailbox wall), metal washer, then locknut. I assume this box will eventually also rust out, since it's steel and exposed to the elements. The door hinge seems to be the most vulnerable part, but this time I will try to fix any rusty spots before they do much damage. Despite this disadvantage of a steel box, it's worth it to have a box that's hard to vandalize.

Ruggedly fabricated from powder-coated heavy gauge steel this rural mail box is well worth its premium price. The magnetic latch is simple and holds the door firmly in the closed position. The flag is also sturdy. Its size is a bit larger than what I think is "standard" for a USPS home mail box. Both big box hardware stores in my area offered mostly cheap plastic junk in a similar sized mail box. A local hardware store stocked the Gibraltar line, but their price was over 30 bucks more than Amazon. If I recall correctly, with Prime, 2-day shipping was free. I was hoping it would be US made, but its origin is Taiwan.

In looking for mailboxes this one stood out. At first glance I thought " this thing is built like a tank " and my impression was - isn't that ridiculous? In further shopping of other company"s products I kept seeing how the finish would fail, rust would appear, doors wouldn't close, door fell open or fell off. I came upon this mailbox again and thought "It's built like a tank! piano hinge instead of two rivets punched through thin metal for the hinge, 20 gauge steel, not flimsy metal or non-rusting-but-flimsy plastic that fades in the sunlight. This is the one! And it is, I bought two for my neighbor and I and the things are HEAVY, solid, the door slams shut like a '52 Cadillac. This is half the price of a certain company sold here with far better reviews. Yes, its also twice the cost of other mailboxes. You don't always get what you pay for, but if solid and sturdy is what you seek over fancy styling, this Spartan warrior of a mailbox is what you seek.

I could never have picked a better mail box. Baseball bat proof, long so the papers fit in great, and big enought all round for a lot of parcels. It is just perfect. Thanks.

Our mailbox is located under a basketball hoop and gets hit constantly. The previous one was thin sheet metal and was pretty banged up so we wanted something that could stand up to this abuse. The Solar Group TB1B0000 fits the bill perfectly. It's make from some pretty thick steel and the balls don't even leave a mark. The door is held closed with a magnetic catch so it doesn't fly open when the ball hits it. This is a good sturdy mailbox and well worth the extra money.Update 6/4/2017 If you need a long lasting mailbox this is the one. After over 4 years under a highly used basketball hoop it's a little faded but otherwise it still looks and works like new. I definitely recommend this if you want a long lasting product.

Our cheap contractor grade mailbox that came with the house 15 years ago was finally looking rusty and beat up enough for me to replace under my strict "don't be that neighbor" policy and I originally bought a standard inexpensive metal mailbox from the local hardware store to replace it, thinking that one was good as another. Not so. The hinge broke within six months, rendering the thing unusable and leading me on a search for a better mailbox. This monster was the one I ended up settling on, and I couldn't be happier. The feature that drew me to this box was the piano hinge. Rather than two weak points of connection on either side, this mailbox has a hinge that runs all the way along the bottom and is nearly indestructible. The magnetic catch on the door is another nice touch, as it doesn't rely on friction to hold the door in place, and will never wear out. The mailbox is quite heavy and the steel used is extremely thick. I have no doubts this mailbox will last for many years and I'm very happy with this purchase. Highly recommended.
