I got this because I just had to replace eight spokes--the eight that are closest to the gears. At some point the chain had slipped off the biggest gear into the gap between that gear and the hub, and had damaged those spokes. While in theory you can prevent that by properly adjusting the L (low) stop on the derailleur, apparently it wasn't adjusted correctly. And of course adjustments can slip out.. So I wanted to have a spoke protector to prevent that happening again. The ID on this is 39mm (as reported by the seller, and as measured between opposite tabs--if you measured between opposite slots between the tabs, it would be more like 42mm). There are 12 tabs. My bike's freewheel thingy (what the gears slip on over) is slightly smaller, about 36mm; so this doesn't securely fit mine. That's not the seller's fault, obviously--I should have checked more carefully. It's also not clear to me that all 9 of my gears will fit on over a spoke protector of this type. The stack of gears looks like it may be too tall for this kind of protector to work. There are alternative protectors that attach to some spokes, although I haven't been able to find one of those that would fit either.

Replaced old, brittle part from original bike; change out was easy and everything worked out great.
