Actual Socket Diameter of a 1/2" Cross Fitting
Why is are PVC fitting sockets bigger than their named size?
PVC sizes get their name from the inner diameter of the PVC pipe as they are nominal, or 'in name only'. If you add the thickness of the wall on each side of the pipe, the outside diameter of the PVC pipe will always be larger that the actual PVC size.
What will this 1/2" Cross fit?
Important PVC Size Information
This 1/2" Cross Furniture Grade PVC Fitting will fit over the end of standard 1/2" Size Schedule 40 plumbing-grade or Furniture Grade PVC pipe, which has an outside diameter of 0.840" or 13/16".
- Connects up to four (4) 1/2" PVC pipe segments for internal support or cross-member reinforcement.
- Pipe inserts inside of the fitting.
- Fits standard 1/2" Schedule 40 PVC pipe.
- Not compatible with CTS or CPVC style pipe, EMT conduit or wood dowels.
How to Use Standard PVC Cross Fittings
When to use PVC Crosses
Furniture Grade 4-Way Crosses connect up to four (4) segments of PVC pipe to make internal support or cross-member structures. PVC pipe can be inserted directly into each socket, creating a perfectly flat, heavy-duty, cross connection.
Insert the PVC Pipe into the Cross Fitting
Cut your PVC pipe segments to size, align the PVC pipe with the Cross socket and press it into place. Repeat for the other three sockets. If preferred, you can use clear PVC cement for a secure and permanent fit: Apply a small amount inside the Cross PVC fitting before insertion.
Tap into Place until Fully Seated in the Cross
Tap each PVC pipe until it is fully seated inside the fitting. The pipe should be inserted until it hits the stop or detent inside the fitting. You can then use the Cross in the remainder of your PVC project or build.

We used these to build a PVC tubing substructure for a cover to be placed on a raised bed planter. Works for our purpose and is decently strong.

Although a bit more expensive than the hardware store plumbing shelf variety, these are nice, clean looking fittings that I used to build alight frame for bird block netting over my blueberries. I opted to use self tapping screws to connect these to pipe rather than PVC cementto facilitate planned changes. The beveled edges work well with the netting material. I'll probably use them again ortheir larger 3/4 brothers for other garden projects.
