Original (NOS) gaskets from the 1950's-1980's are mostly plant fiber based which become brittle and hardened over the decades and drastically lose their sealing ability. This is the fourth time I've had to buy this damn gasket. The other three times I bought it it apparently is not the right thickness because my starter keeps getting jammed up on the starter cover. When I open the cover back up this gasket rips so I had to order a new one I've done that three times hopefully the fourth time is the charm if not I'll have to buy two to clear the freaking thickness so that the starter doesn't drag. Screw this one. Went OEM and now the starter doesn't drag. So thickness on the Nippon gasket is apparently a shade thinner than OEM. It's also a lot more flexible than the OEM, that's why it kept tearing.

If you have to replace your starter on your TRX 300, my personal advice do not scrape the old gasket off unless needed. This gasket is a certain thickness which is needed to clear the starter shaft from the cover. But 100% recommend if you need it.
