ROLLER CHAIN PARTS

HOW TO MEASURE CHAIN SIZE

HOW TO MEASURE CHAIN SIZE
Each of these components will be measured separately

  • Pitch: The length measured from center of pin to center of pin. (P)
  • Roller Diamete : The outside diameter of the roller. (D)
  • Plate Height : The dimension from top of plate to bottom of plate.(H)
  • Pin Diameter: The outside diameter of the pin.(F)
  • Pin Length : From the outside of pin end to the other side of pin end. (A)
  • Plate Thickness: Thickness of the plates from one flat side to the other side of the same plate. (T)
  • Roller Width : The inside width of the inner side plates ( W)
  • Factors to consider when choosing an ideal pitch of chain would include:
  • 1. In-board or out-board drive sprocket configuration
  • 2. Availability of engine sprockets, Final desired gearing
  • 3. Set-up difficulities (length of chain measurements)

HOW TO MEASURE CHAIN SIZE

As a first step, we should define the components of roller chain

  1. Pin Link Plate : This is an outer plate on the pin link of roller chain.
  2. Roller Link Plate : This is an inner plate on the roller link of roller chain.
  3. Roller : This rotates on top of the bushing on the roller link.
  4. Pin : This is press fit into the pin link plate and bisects the bushings in the roller link.
  5. Bush : This is press fit into two roller link plates and is bisected by the pin in the pin link.
  • What Size Chain Should I Buy ?
  • Most go kart chains and mini bike chains have the chain size stamped directly on the chain links.
  • #35, 40, 41, 420 and 50 chain are used on American Go Karts and Mini Bikes.
  • An 11 or 12 tooth clutch sprocket usually indicates the use of 35 chain.
  • 10 tooth clutch sprockets usually indicate the use of #40, 41 or 420 chain.

WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR ROLLER CHAIN

There are a few ways to know when it's time to replace a roller chain.

  1. When the chain elongation has reached 1.5% (this may be less when using sprockets that have more than 60 teeth).
  2. When the link plate has some damage (cracking, distortions, etc..)
  3. When any other component of the roller chain has damage (cracking, distortions, irregular movment etc..)
  4. When pin has bending or wrapped, or distortion of link is found.
  5. When substantial rust or improper flex is found.

ROLLER CHAIN MAINTENANCE

When buying any roller chain it is important to properly maintain it. Doing routine maintenance to a roller chain not only improves safety, but it also reduces down time, energy consumption, and drastically improves the chain life.

  • Chain wear elongation : As a general rule, most roller chain drive applications can be considered to be worn out at a length increase of approximately 1.5%. It is also important that your chain is regularly checked for wear.
  • Chain lubrication : Proper lubrication of roller chain drives is an important factor in getting the best possible performance from drive systems. No matter how well a transmission system is designed, if it is not properly lubricated its service life will be shortened. Incorrect or insufficient lubrication is one of the primary reasons for premature roller chain wear and eventual failure.
  • Chain slack : Roller chain operates most effectively when there is a suitable amount of slack. If too much tension is applied, the oil film between the bearing surface areas (i.e. the pin and bush) can become restricted or broken, causing increased wear and damage to the bearing components.
  • Sprocket wear : Once a sprocket has worn, it can cause rapid chain wear and will need to be replaced at the first available opportunity. Replace it too early, however, and you could be incurring unnecessary costs.
  • Length: Make sure you order enough chain, any extra links can always be removed. Do not run the chain too tight, it will grind the sprocket teeth down in a short period of time.

The chain quality is excellent. The included chain breaker is subpar. It is not durable enough for this size chain. It failed on the second pin of the first link we were working on. We needed to purchase another heavier duty breaker to accommodate this size chain.

Worst chain break tool I’ve ever used. Both tips provided broke immediately and did more damage to the chain than actually getting it apart.

Breaks chains pretty good. But the pin pusher doesn’t quite go far enough for the chain that came with it #35. So pins had to be pulled out with another tool. Would be perfect if the pusher stuck out just a little further. The chain is strong and have had no issues with it.

I like how it all came in one kit pretty cool and the 10 foot of chain was not the best quality but it was not really bad either it has a little more side to side play and that turns in to all over play but as of my now working with out any problems the link buster and chain holder work good also for the price and what all you get for that price I'd buy it again so if you need a couple feet of chain or all 10 feet this is a good deal have fun and be safe happy new year everyone

The tools that come with it make it completely worth the purchase if you need some #40 chain.

I ordered this kit with a #35 chain. The chain appears to be well made. The chain breaker works well but it helps if you clamp one edge of it in a vise. Otherwise, you seem to run out of hands to hold and manipulate the chain and breaker at the same time. The chain stretcher, intended to pull the two ends of the chain together to facilitate insertion of the master link, has a bit of a problem. The range of adjustment is insufficient to draw the ends closely enough together to install the master link. Therefore, I must assume that the same would be true when trying to use it on a #25 chain. It looks like it would be workable on chains larger than #35. I can't speak to durability as I have not yet run the planer on which I installed the chain.

The chain worked fine. The breaker took a couple of tries, but got the job done. The holder/puller did not work well. It would not close tight enough to get the master link in. I had pull in addition to using the puller to get the master link into place.
