Its popularity also extends into music production as a premium grade instrument microphone. Its Variable-D design and heavy-duty internal pop filter excel for close-in voice work, while an internal element shock-mount reduces vibration-induced noise.

I don’t have the Shure SM7B, but this definitely sounds better than that based on the demos. This is perfect for deep voices for podcasts and vocals. Doesn’t pick up background noise and pretty idiot proof.

The Electro-Voice RE20 is a legendary microphone that has been a staple in broadcasting since its introduction in 1968. Its Variable-D technology minimizes proximity effect, ensuring consistent sound quality even with close-miking techniques. The RE20's rugged, industrial design not only appeals to my aesthetic preferences but also delivers exceptional durability. In comparison to the Shure SM7B, another popular choice among podcasters and YouTubers, I find the RE20's sound profile better complements my voice, providing clean and crisp audio that enhances my recordings. While the RE20 may not have the sleek appearance of some competitors, its performance and reliability make it a superior choice for those seeking professional-grade sound quality. Although it's an investment, the RE20's proven track record and exceptional build quality make it worth every penny. I couldn't be happier with this purchase and highly recommend it to anyone serious about their audio production.

I'm building a home studio, and I chose this mic because it's the exact same one we've used at all the radio stations I've worked at over the past 23 years. The sound is rich (not hollow or tinny), and there are versatile stands you can use with it. For professional quality voicework, this mic is the way to go!

Wasted your time with cheap mics like Yeti Blues or $100-200 mics? Well, I did too and I wasn't happy about it. I spend a ton of time watching reviews and comparisons, history, and sound samples and this is where I ended up at. Having been used for vocals on several famous records in the 60's alone and continues to be used in just about every studio. Not to mention that it's a staple in just about every radio station or broadcast session. Here's my big takeaways and why this is my fav mic:1) Cost is relatively low compared to high end mics. Expensive for small time or beginner podcasters or musicians but will last you a lifetime and you'll still be at the top of your game.2) Rejects background noise VERY well. If you are in an untreated room (i.e. you don't have acoustic panels etc.) this can still sound really great.3) Built in Pop filter that can handle most plosives without requiring a separate Pop filter (your mileage may vary though depending your voice). Speak into the mic off center if it's an issue.4) Great at handling proximity effect - you don't have to worry about your tone changing if you aren't always on top of the mic.5) Built like a tank - this thing will be around after the bombs drop with cockroaches and Keith Richards.

I have been working with 5 different radio stations in my area for about 15 years. I regularly play with a large variety of audio equipment. The Electro-voice mics have been rock solid, and the best sounding of all. The bigger station I work with has 15 or so RE20 and RE320 mics that they use for all of their voice work. So far, I have never had an EV mic come with a buzz or hum problem of any kind. They have all been perfectly dependable right out of the box. When I decided to setup my own personal studio, I went with the EV mics. I bought one of each the RE320 and the RE20. At first I did have some noise problems, but I discovered that the issues were coming from a problematic mixer and some incorrect settings with the audio processing equipment. Once I got those ironed out everything has been great.I would recommend EV mics every single time, especially the RE20. They really are fantastic.

This mic has a very close and intimate sound, it captures your voice very cleanly. You need a preamp like a Focusrite Scarlett to boost the gain to audible levels, which is normal as it is a quiet mic. If you pair it with a Focusrite AND a Cloudlifter then you will have even CLEANER sound with little to no noise. This is important for live broadcasting, but not as important for recording as you can remove a lot of noise in post production, which means you can get away with just a preamp. The mic is oddly visually stimulating as well.

As a broadcaster some like it, some hate it. I personally love this mic. I have a Rode Broadcaster which technically sounds better because its colored and the proximity effect is enhanced. However, the EV RE20 has something so unique and gorgeous about the way it looks, makes you sound and record. I absolutely love this mic.
