My 1960s-built house had Central shower-type shutoff valves installed for the laundry hookups. Unfortunately, with many decades of use, I found that the packing washer of my hot water valve was allowing water to slowly leak into the handles. When tightening the valve on the packing washer didn't stop the leak I had to shut off the hot water supply for a real repair. I removed the valve and carefully cleaned scale away, tried some universal packing washer rubber tube material that just squished out when the valve was re-installed, and then learned about the hassle of finding an exact-fit fiber packing washer.This valve was under $9 at the time and seemed like a much simpler way to just replace the old valve entirely and take my time on finding a packing washer if I want to repair the old valve for re-use. I did notice that the taper of the brass down to the wrench gripping spot looked slightly different from my old valve, but it fit just fine in practice so maybe they saved a little brass with an updated design.

Turned off the water supply to change out the washing machine. When I turned the water valves back on the hot side was leaking. Replaced with this valve was quick and easy and we have hot water to the washing machine again.
