The speakerphone function on my telephone does not work well so I was looking for a full duplex box that could plug into the headset jack of the phone's handset. This fit the bill nicely. Telephones that include full duplex speakerphones are very pricey. While the chat 50 is not cheap, it is well worth the price. The chat 50 is far better than the speakerphone function on my panasonic link2cell phone system. But, in addition, it is also a great full duplex speakerphone for Skype calls, and gotomeeting conference calls. The only issue I've ever had is that I am primarily a mac user and the software that you need to use to set up the chat 50 only runs on windows. I didn't think it mattered because when I connected it to the mac it worked immediately. But when I connected my cellphone, there was a very distinct echo that I could only fix by getting a Windows machine set up so I could configure the chat 50 properly. Other than this, I've been very happy with this purchase. So much in fact that I've just purchased 2 more units.

I use this for desktop Skype as I work from home and while on the road for use as a speakerphone with my colleagues in hotel rooms. Sound is great and works flawlessly, Skype and GChat recognize it automatically and I have not had to configure anything, just plug and play.

I bought one of these because I'd seen the bigger version of this unit work well in conference rooms and was pleased that it plugged into my Mac without any fuss. This one is smaller and suitable for a home office worker. The critical thing about a unit like this is that it avoids echoes properly (even when there is a lot of latency on the connection) and that your voice is clear to the people on the other end of the line. Feedback on audio quality from people I've been on calls with is good. The LED that changes from blue to red when you are on mute is a nice touch, and the mute button is easy to hit. Looks a bit pricey compared with similar units but I'm happy with mine.

PRO's:Field tested this product for compatibility with cell phone (cell phone adapter cord purchased separately) and USB online VOIP using Google voice calls through gmail. This product works on both cell phone and internet VOIP with good volume. Will save Polycom and phone line charges compared to those charged at hotels and provide good two way dulplex connection for conference calls to multiple sites with good response in a small room.(10' x 15' in my test with limited drop in volume or sensitivity). While pricey for personal use, this device has saved my company hundreds of dollars from day 1 rental charges, and is easy to carry on the road. The Chat 50 device is slim, small, and compact at 1-3/8" x 3-3/4" x 4", and weighs about a pound. It was a PC Magazine Editor's Choice in 2006.The Chat 50 was "plug and play" requiring no additional software or drivers, on Windows 8 Pro, and Windows XP.CON's:The mute button turns red when on and blue when off and connected to a PC, but did not mute regardless of the button color, be careful. The volume control will result in a modest increase in volume (compared to a polycom)with a limited upper end in loudness. There have been reports that people with working Chat 50, bricks with the firmware update, so if it works don't fix it. There are other packages besides this CHAT 50/USB product. If you need the power adapter, or any additional cords this SKU (shelf keeping unit) will not have it, look for the details on each description to match your needs. To keep the cost down, this only included the USB cable and a start up guide. Other information is available online at [...]

I've been taking this on trips and to meetings for the last 3-4 years, and I use it for business and personal calls in webinars and with Skype. I bought an adapter for the iPhone and couldn't get that to work but the missing functionality is not a big loss for my purposes. The device is compact, durable, and easy to use. The speaker is fine for conversations and fills up the room. It's great for conferences in offices or small-midsized conference rooms. The mike is evidently fine, too, and picks up conversations from around the table (though I've never been on the receiving end of this device). Sometimes I lean into it to make sure I'm heard, but I find I do that more in small offices where there are echoes than in larger rooms where my voice doesn't have to compete with itself. The ability to capture voice is what matters to me in most cases, as I want other people to hear me well while I'm hands-free. I do sometimes play music through it, but that is not one of its strengths compared to the many small music speakers that are available. However, for business purposes, what's important is a clear speaker/mike for teleconferencing than for music.
