Very sturdy cast iron parts just like the original in my fireplace...Clean out flapper is secured by 2 cotter pins with the round head loop part on the outside which bumps up against the bricks.I just popped out the 2 Cotter Pins and reinstalled them with the round loop end on the inside of the flapper and the 2 pin ends bent flat along side the outside of the frame.... Slid into the brick opening perfectly..... Would buy again

Our fireplace from the '50s had the original ash dump. I ordered this and although it was the same size, there is a lip where the hinge sits making it slightly larger than the original. All I did was take a cold chisel and a hammer and took out some of the brick around the hole to make it slightly larger. Dropped the new ash dump right in and it's perfect! This one is priced well for what it is but I guess the slight modification I had to do would put some people off

The door is great but would not fit my 9" x 4" cutout in the fireplace. There are cotter pins that are the hinges for the door. They take up room from the length. The hole would have to be 9 3/8" for this door to fit.

Replacing an ash dump door that was over 30 years old and had perished to the point it fell through the opening and into the dump. The opening in our fireplace floor was one 4"x9" brick (slightly larger than a common brick) plus mortar, so an overall opening of about 5"x 9.5". This assembly fit in with a bit of wiggle room and the flange overlaps the opening well on three sides. The fourth side (one of the short sides) leaves a small gap. With mortar, all should be fine. Assembly seems sturdy and looks durable.

This product isn't perfect, as it has a few scratches on it, and the finish is uneven, as there are gray splotches here and there, but overall, it seems very sturdy, fits my hole perfectly, is in the back so it's hardly noticeable, and at $20, is cheap, as my chimney cleaner said his company sold them for $50.Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

One of the issues in buying one-off items like the Ash Dump cover is getting some accurate dimensions so any installer can be prepared for "modifications" that may need performed. I know that the product manufacturing could change over time, so consider this review time-sensitive and based on my purchase date. The product is assembled from two pieces, the cover frame and the cover door. Both are cast iron and appeared to be a high-quality manufacturing and fit. There are actually two series of measures that need to be considered. The actual frame fit dimensions and then the frames overlapping flange dimensions. The pit entrance I needed to fill was 4-5/8-in by 8-3/4-in. But there was a trick to the measurements. The frame fit dimension for what I received was 4-1/2-in by 8-1/2-in, with an additional 1/4-in bump-out on each side required on the width for the flap hinge clearance. Thus the reason for the stated 9-in width. To make the unit fit, I had to chip out a very small 1/4-in by 1/4-in notch on one side of the receiving entrance brick. With the notch created, the product fit into the pit entrance. The flange dimensions were 5-1/2-in by 9-1/2-in and provided complete coverage over the pit entrance. One item I noticed was that if the pit entrance were not completely square with a minimum 9-1/2-in diagonal measurements, and the cover was to be forced into fitting the pit entrance, the cover could slightly warp and the cover door might not close correctly. I did not have that issue, but I could envision other installations that might have an issue. The cover has been through a couple of fires and so far, no issues. Thank you Vestal Manufacturing for a quality product at a reasonable price.
