I learned about barley hay and algae many years ago, and now this is all I do to keep it under control in my goldfish ponds (4000 gallon). It’s natural, and chemical free. Packaged as they are, it is soooo much easier than buying an entire bale, and breaking it up to use which is super messy. I am sold on these, and would recommend them 100%.

There is a neglected pond near me. There is an inlet but since we're in a severe drought, there hasn't been any water flow. It is always algae covered in the summer and very gross. This is not the type of pond recommended for this product. Since the pond is not in a place I can actively manage I took the straw out of the netting and tossed the straw flakes (sections) in. They floated on top and are still floating on top. The areas around the straw are already improving! It has been 4 days. This is a large pond and I know I can't treat the whole thing but deer frequent the area and I was hoping to clear the water for them. I didn't want to leave the netting unattended not knowing what to expect from the product and being concerned for the turtles. I cannot believe the algae is already dissipating!

Most of the barley I have purchased are these little tiny things. This is big! It is a great size for a pond. Best yet!

This product is what i switched from Summit 135 clear water barely straw (subscribe monthly )after using it for several year. My pond is over 13000 Gallons and it is too expensive to using it monthly. The effort of this product is worse than Summit product. However it is still possible to clean up the fish pond to a certain extent when i use two at the time and changing it more frequently. The price is cheaper. this is good. The reason for giving a low rating is because i found that more and more wheat straw are in the fish pond, and there are a lots of broken straws when cleaning the filter daily, it bring a lots of unnecessary trouble to cleaning.

This is awesome! We will be buying several now to be able to swap out every few days. It cleared up our green pond after the algae fix killed 4 of our koi, left us with 3. We didn’t want to use anything chemically related at all again after that. Algaefix apparently kills fish a lot!! Someone mentioned this straw, we found this and tried it. Took 2 days to clear up a 3000 gallon pond. We bought 2 smaller ones we toss in when we pull out the bale. Rinse out the bale and let it dry. Then a few days later we pull the 2 small ones and drop the bale back in, rinse the 2 small ones and let dry. Works great. Will be even better when we have several bales to swap out every few days.

This is utter trash. Just crumbled up pieces of straw swept up from the barn floor loosely wrapped in a bit of netting. The old saying is, "you get what you pay for", this is true here it's cheap garbage. They also give a completely erroneous instruction. that is they tell you to put something in it to make it sink . is totally and completely wrong proper use of barley straw bales has it so that 50% of it is above the waterline. Another aspect of this that is dangerous to the fish in order to prevent all those crumbled up pieces of barley straw from falling into the water out to be some wrapping with Gorilla tape. That is to secure the junk netting. But at one point one of my very large fish that caught in the net. Luckily I had a friend with me and we saved the fish. Tossed both bales into the dumpster where they belonged. If I could give it zero stars I would.
