They aren’t the weight of normal rounds, also don’t expect them to run in a lever action 357 or anything like that. However I bought these for my Jframe and they are great for practicing reloads and general CCW dry fire training. I always have a strip loader loaded with these in my dresser for practice and if you CC a revolver you should do the same.

I am a professional firearms instructor. Over the years, I've tried just about every approach to giving my students something to safely practice loading, unloading, and dry fire with. Then I bought a package of A-Zoom snap caps, first in 9mm. They worked so well that I got a supply of them in almost ever common pistol and revolver calibers. I use them regularly in my classes. We have lost one or two of them, but never broken one. The red color makes them almost impossible to mistake for live ammo.If you own a gun, you should know the importance of practice, especially dry fire. With these you can safely practice loading, unloading and dry fire, all without ever handline a live round, and without risking a broken firing pin. Get a set!

I mean these do exactly what they’re supposed to I suppose, although I would love to see some comprehensive testing to show that these really prevent breechface cracking or other issues due to repeated dry firing. The “primer cap” is a rubber piece. Does this slow down and restrict the firing pin similar to a real metal primer? Well obviously not, we’re comparing brass? to rubber. They are not going to have the same material properties. The question is whether this difference is enough to cause damage to your pistol after repeated firing.I have seen other brands of dummy rounds with metal, spring loaded dummy primers. Maybe these do a better job of preventing dry fire issues? Or maybe the rubber primers are fine, but I’m not 100% convinced the Snap Cap design for dummy rounds is sufficient to prevent issues in all cases. Then again I’m talking out of my ass a bit.The other aspect I really don’t like is that these dummy rounds are nowhere near the weight of real lead rounds. Next time I buy dummy rounds, I will look for another brand that actually replicates the weight of the rounds.Practice is important, that’s why dummy rounds exist. I think they should be as close to the real thing as possible. Snap Caps are pretty much the same weight as spent casings, so if you don’t mind practicing with your firearm using dummy rounds that feel as light as spent casings, then buy these!

Many gun owners do not understand snap caps. Snap caps have 2 important functions. The first purpose is to protect the gun. Snap caps should be acquired along with the gun regardless of whether or not the gun has a frame-mounted, rebounding firing pin or not. If the firing pin is hammer-mounted (older S&W, most SAA, most Rossi), then it should not be dry fired, because dry firing will harm the frame and/or the firing pin. But dry firing is not good, even for 'floating' firing pins. Dry firing instills a bad habit--shooting a gun without loading it. Anyone used to dry firing may one day pick up a loaded gun and pull the trigger, without checking anything. Half (or more) or those gun owners who agree with me about dry firing say there is no need to waste money on snap caps--just use spent cartridges. That is not only too cheap, it is an ineffective and dangerous alternative. Ineffective because the dented primer cap no longer resists the firing pin. Snap caps have a polymer cap where the primer would normally go. This cap is resilient for several thousand strikes. Dangerous because spent cartridges and live cartridges look very much the same from the back. Snap caps are dark red, and anyone can identify them at a glance. And remember that not all frame-mounted firing pins have bushings and springs (e.g. Marlin lever actions). The other purpose of snap caps is training. Each gun has a manual of arms that is a little (or a lot) different than other guns. When you acquire a new gun and when you let anyone use that gun, you should go through the manual of arms with snap caps. Yes, they are a little pricey, but they will last a lifetime, and think about how much they are worth if they save a life.

I purchased a .357/.38 for the wife when I travel. She doesn't like firearms. Doesn't like the noise or smell or the kick of a handgun. I gave her the new revolver and had her load, unload, load, dry fire and repeat again and again using these snap caps. No risk of an accidental shot due to improper handling by a novice. The accurate size and workmanship of the snap caps made her so comfortable with the process that after a week or two, she began asking me when she could go out and shoot "her" gun. Mission accomplished thanks to a high quality product from A-Zoom. Since she had a laser on her gun, use of the snap caps permitted her to monitor her aim when she pulled the trigger through and develop a smooth technique. So far, these snap caps have seen hundreds of actions in the revolver and in a carbine chambered the same as the handgun. No issues, no failures. Nothing but satisfaction.
