The skip-tooth comb is a necessity when working with breeds that have layers of differing hair types: naturally woven hair near the skin, fluffy hair in the middle and long hairs rising through the layers. It still takes patience to work through a heavy coat, so some surface-level pre-cutting with a shallow blade is a good start. For young dogs, the easiest solution is to shave dogs down as though they were going into surgery, then use a skip-tooth blade for maintenance as their coats come back in. For older dogs, coats have a more difficult time coming back after a full shave; so, it's best to avoid an aggressive shave.

This did a great job trimming our Burmese mountain dogs mane so his slober isn't as bad.
