Had quite a few of non-contact testers since 15 years in the trade, and that's my 2nd one. Battery last like 2 years even tho it's always on, doesn't give a false positive and no false negative if you don't try to test thru thick armor. Only downside, and I don't care, there is no sound for when you're alone and want to use it as a breaker finder.

I've carried this voltage sniffer in my tool pouch for years at a time. It functions well after being beat, bent, dropped, and misused as screw driver in everyday use. The battery cap never pops, it doesn't ever switch on in your pouch and die. It is simple and streamlined. No buzzy noise, recommend testing light indicator by tapping in hand for function test before probing voltage. The newer ones have a wider collar- this is annoying and probably some lawyers idea. Sometimes detects lower voltage leakage making you believe full 120v, but I haven't found any brand that doesn't do that. Better safe than sorry. Get the real meter out when in doubt. Great product overall.

Just what I wanted. Pricier than many detectors with gimmicky bells, whistles and adjustments. Does exactly what I need it to do, reliably, no more, no less. Almost identical to my original FLUKE which I had gotten used to but seems to have been discontinued.Works great.

I am in and out of electrical wiring and controls all day long. This tester is so simple to use there is no excuse not to save your life. I won't touch a wire in a major appliance until I test the wires I touch or reaching through. No switch and no tone to drive you nuts. Battery lasts a year and I use it all day. Best purchase to save your bacon. Easy to tell if it is working, just gently tap it on anything. If it lights for a second it works. All others I’ve tried I don’t trust

This is a great NCV detector. I have it with my Amprobe CT 100 kit (circuit tracer). Simple and easy to use for the professional and the home owner. Great care and proper safety need to be exercised when using these types of tools and is by no means a replacement for a good volt meter or a "wiggy" style tester. A "live, dead, live" test should be done prior to working on any possible energized circuit. That being said, if unsure, call a professional. Reliable and easy to use and no frills. Lights up in the presence of circuit voltage listed in the specs. I have also used mine and have obtained a positive live light on a 50 V circuit but I wouldn't rely on it for anything lower. I tend to protect these types of tools from being banged around or dropped too much. They could be considered precision and if dropped or abused they will fail. I trust mine only after a "live, dead, live" test every time I use it. Battery life is good but I change mine every 6 mos. Trusted name in Amprobe gives me confidence in the product. Being a licensed electrician I would recommend it.

Excellent voltage detector for working inside electrical boxes and other wiring work. It will detect live 120VAC wires from 1/4 to 1/2" away through the insulation. This makes it easy to identify hot wires in a crowded electrical box. I have used this several times already and it seems to be consistent and reliable in identifying the hot wires without giving false positives.Some users expect this type of device to detect live wires from several inches away - it will NOT do that, and that is what makes it so useful to me. I purchased a similar device from Lowes that DID detect voltage from 4 or 5 inches away, which makes it useless for working in an electrical box. Every wire shows "hot" because you can't get the probe far enough away from the one live wire in the box.

I have electrical projects coming up, where I need to cut into an existing circuit. I can turn off the circuit breaker, but in the attic, there's no way to know for sure if the power is off on the cable I need to cut. My search for a reliable non-contact voltage detector brought me here.I must have looked over all the different brands here on Amazon. Many reviewers, unhappy with their present purchase, referred to the Amprobe brand as what they went to, or were going to buy. This was what made me decide to buy this specific non-contact voltage probe.► CAUTION - Always test this device before using it, to ensure it's 100% functional!The Pros:+ The shipping is free.+ Comes with 2 AAA alkaline batteries installed.+ Nothing to turn on, since it's always on.+ Very sensitive, even detecting which side of the cable is HOT!The Cons:- Not the lowest cost non-contact voltage probe, but sometimes it's better to pay more for quality.- No audible, just a red flashing light when a voltage is detected. Having an audible wasn't important to me, but some may want an audible with the light.- As with most non-contact voltage probes, this probe can't detect voltage presence if the cable is shielded.Notes:▪ When I first tried the probe, it didn't work! I checked the batteries & they were good? The problem was with the battery compartment top, which wasn't screwed on tight enough. Once I tightened it securely, the probe worked perfectly.► Update - January 19, 2013I used this nifty tool today to verify the cable I was going to cut was the correct one & to verify the power was turned off.I'm upgrading my rating from 4 to 5, as this tool saved me time & works perfectly!
