They're steel, and they look and feel very robust. The machining seems precise, no visible imperfections. They have a black finish, which I assume is some kind of coating for added durability.Replacing the bevel gears is a bit of a process, as it involves disassembling the axles. If you're not familiar with working on RC crawlers, it's a good idea to watch some tutorial videos online. The gears themselves fit perfectly into the axles. They meshed smoothly with the other gears inside the axle housing. I used some threadlock on the screws to make sure everything stayed put. The installation took me a couple of hours, I took my time and made sure everything was properly aligned and greased.The difference in performance after installing these overdrive gears is noticeable. My crawler has more wheel speed, which is helpful for certain types of crawling and for navigating obstacles. It's definitely more responsive. I haven't noticed any increase in noise from the drivetrain, which was a concern I had. The steel gears seem very durable. I've put several packs through the crawler since installing them, and they show no signs of wear. I've run it on rocks, dirt, and even some light mud, and the gears are still performing flawlessly.

I needed a set of underdrive gears for my AR44 based axles. These seemed to fit just fine and work as they should. Time will tell how long they last, but so far they seem to work fine.
