How to replace the bonnet and poppet valve

1. Close the bottom valve handle and turn it to the level to close the water outlet;

2. Unscrew the small nut on the bell, and open the bell;

3. Open the plastic bonnet and remove internal debris. There should be no plastic fragments inside the device (special attention: do not remove the metal piece at the bottom of the reset device to prevent the spring under it from hurting you);

4. Replace with new bonnet and poppet valve kit and tighten by hand;

5. Place the bell on top of the metal screw, and then tighten the small nut. Be careful not to tighten it too tightly, just twist it by hand, just to fix the metal bell on the device, and keep a certain tension.

Reminder: In order to avoid replacing the bonnet and poppet valve again, if the temperature continues to be low and freezing, please cover the backflow prevention device with a blanket or heat preservation bag.

While not the best quality bonnet and poppet out there, it does the job at an affordable price of around $20. I had mine break after 1 year of use but because the product has a 2 year warranty the seller was kind enough to send me another one free of charge.

When I started up my sprinkler, water poured out of the external tap. After taking it apart, I found this little gizmo was broken and beyond hope. The local hardware store wanted $60 for a replacement, but this was around $20 online. Installing it was simply dropping it into the valve and tightening it. It took less than 5 minutes to do.

I've seen a lot of people comment that this is cheap and fails... 1. It is the exact replacement that I needed. Everything fits perfect. 2. You need to ensure you use the silicone that is provided and it is tighten down all the way until the rubber gasket is seated. 3. Do not over tighten or it will break (it's plastic and is meant to break). 4. The entire reason this exists is to break if it freezes so make sure you get your sprinkler systems blown out before it freezes each year. Also make sure you loosen the bleeding valve at the bottom so water doesn't stay in the valve assembly. Over all, great product and I hopefully will not have to replace again.

What can I say, I broke the other one I had and needed a replacement. My sprinkler system was dead without it. thankfully I found this on Amazon and it worked out great. Its just amazing, though, how much these things cost for what you get.

I forgot that you cannot just put the water on full tilt at the end of the winter and blew out my bonnet. So I order a new one, and just put it in today. After slow pressurizing the system successfully and having the backflow pressure "pop" into place, I started the sprinkler. You can see the result.I will note, the vertical screw to hold the cap on is much smaller in diameter and snapped off compared to my old one. That is not the cause of this, but I suspect it speaks to the quality of the item. This freaking thing is really expensive for what it is, and for it to not work is frustrating.5/13/22 update: I got a new one from a different manufacturer. The difference and the point of failure was immediately apparent. The one without the screw on top is the one reviewed here. If you look close inside, the spring is a much heavier gauge. I would say it takes 3x the force to close. Apparently, my city water pressure is not that high (I would classify it as "normal"), so it cannot close and hence the spewing of water everywhere.The seller has graciously offered via multiple venues to refund my money, which is a good sign, kudos to them. I have no ill against the seller. Just looks like a design flaw to me. Hopefully they can fix it and maybe I will try again when I break my current one.
