Upfront: In my quest to save a bit more money (that is the root of most of my problems...) I bought a bunch of different "cheaper" deep pleated MERV13 filter sets, and this is one of them. So far ALL of these cheaper Amazon-listed MERV13 filters suffer from the same quality issues, so if you are reading this, don't just jump to a different similar product; this one will serve you equally as well. The Good:Size is right, foam sides are well-adhered.There are plenty of deep pleats to give more surface area, and the pleats are reinforced with metal wire. Basic requirement of a good filter, and it has that, but.... (see the bad)The Questionable:They don't provide any third party data, and looking at the filter liner itself, I really question if this would pass a MERV13 test. For us, that is OK because other than fire/smoke season, MERV8 is fine. The Bad:A. The edges of the pleats are NOT glued. This is a basic requirement for ANY filter of ANY filtration level; the pleat edges are merely pushed up against the cardboard frame, and that DOES (there are many tests of this) allow unfiltered air to pass around the pleats. To be frank, this is my main issue here. It's just cheap, insufficient construction. Yes it's hard to glue all the edges to the box: but that's the basic standard of a good filter.B. The foam around the edges is open cell foam. So you will absolutely get leakage through the foam even when compressed. It WILL filter the air a bit, but unclear to what level.Result: So yes, perhaps (maybe???) the filter media is filtering out X% of small contaminants, but the edges aren't. Now, to be fair, it is still filtering the majority of the air. The issue I have with that is that as a whole, this is not providing actual MERV13 performance, AND it will allow MUCH larger particles through around the edges and that will build up on your furnace/AC coils, reducing overall system performance and requiring more frequent system maintenance... and let's be honest, who really does that?In the end, we'll use these for a short bit during non-dusty/smoke seasons, but will probably go back to filters that cost this much EACH. Yeah it's a lot of $, but so is your health, and $70/filter for a good quality filter is what we'd pay to go out for a good dinner. For us, worth it. Your call.
