This bow has round wood with unbleached horse hair. I have played violin for 50 years for church and casually, took 10 years of formal lessons. This bow is the same weight and balance as the bows I grew up with. As usual with new horse hair, I had to rosin it much and play and rosin and play it to get it to play the violin. This is as expected and I watched my teacher go through this process many times when replacing horse hair. However it seemed to take much less time and rosin. That could be the rosin I bought? ( String House SR020 Handmade Olive Hard Strong Mature Sound Rosin For Violin Viola Cello ) One mistake that many people make when rosining up a new bow is to make long sweeps. That is fine once the bow is broken in but for a new bow short and rapid sweeps are a must because the rosin tends to stick better when it starts and stops.The bow plays beautifully on my old violin. The reason for four stars is that the wood is slightly warped (when you tighten the hair, the wood is slightly to one side and not straight up the middle of the hair.)This bow has a ebony wood frog with a metal guard (on the bow edge which was the edge my last bow started breaking along) unlike the last one and so I expect it to last longer than my previous one. Very happy with the purchase over all!
