About this item

  • Green coffee beans from a single estate in Ahuachapan, El Salvador at altitude between 4500 and 5000 ft.
  • Sealed in an Ecotact bag for maximum water and air resistance. Suitable for long term storage.
  • All of our beans are kept in a cool warehouse sealed in grain pro bags until time of sale, and then portioned into Ecotact bags. We used to vacuum seal them, but the seals often broke during transit and the beans would spill out. Thus, we are constantly improving the process.
  • Honey washed beans have some mucelage left on them after processing, and that mucelage makes the beans have a slightly orange coating which is visible on close inspection. This is a layer of natural sugar which gives the beans a different flavor profile from the simply wet milled lavado variety.

El Salvador's Coffee Industry Challenges

A mere decade ago, El Salvador was exporting over 12 million quintals of coffee in large burlap sacks. With the right labor and transportation, a single farm could yield dozens or even hundreds of quintals. Coffee harvesting is labor and capital intensive, and economic issues have significantly impacted El Salvador's coffee production. In 2022, exports dropped to less than 1 million quintals.

I've been hand roasting coffee for a few years, and tried beans from Etheopia, Tansania, Nicaragua, Brazil, Costa Rica and Colombia. I wanted to try some from el Salvador partly to support their new economy.I was surprised at how good this coffee is. Very aromatic. The seller is right about the lighter roast - I usually aim for Full City roast, where the oil first begins to come out of the beans. I went for a lighter City roast, slightly darker than the color of milk chocolate, and it's delicious. The seller included a nice write up about the farm and improved economy which I thought was a nice personal touch. I just ordered my second 5lb bag. And, please ignore this review so they don't sell all of their stock, LOL. I do my roasting outdoors using a propane burner and a wok. Previously I used a Whirly Pop, which worked very well, but I wore out the gears as it takes about a half hour to roast coffee, vs a couple of minutes for its intended use, which is popcorn.
