Our Story

In 2007, Daniel discovered tenkara while researching the history and culture of fishing in Japan. In 2008, he visited Japan for his first time and saw tenkara in person. He returned to the US with a tenkara rod in his bag and started enjoying tenkara on backpacking trips. The method was simple and effective; yet, there was no information in English on tenkara. Daniel decided he wanted to share tenkara with people, it would make it easy for people to take-up fly-fishing and experienced anglers like himself were sure to enjoy its minimalist nature. He realized that to share tenkara he could have written many articles and books about it, but if people didn’t get a chance to experience tenkara for themselves it would not spread. Thus, Daniel set out to create a business designing tenkara rods, tenkara lines and tenkara flies and putting them in the hands of people.

What makes a Tenkara USA rod stand out?

I like 21' to 24' rods, and I use #6 level floating fly line for my main line. The itty bitty ones everybody else sells won't hold my line. They are made for a line half the length of mine and 1/5 the diameter. This one is pretty nice but is a little expensive, too expensive to get one for each of my lines, so I took off a star for that. It is a little too "busy", too many value added features. All I need is a line holder that will hold my line. I guess I need to make some. But if you only have one rod, sure, get this one. It's a nice piece of gear. This and the line and tippet and fly all neatly kept on it, and your rod and a landing net, and you are ready to fish.It is kind of nice to have the little fly compartment, sometimes. I can have my freshwater trout rig on the spool and stick the whole thing in my pocket for some REAL minimalist fishing. NO ROD!

It's a well constructed and clever little line keeper. It just does not work well. It's hard to wind/unwind line. The fly compartment opens unexpectedly dumping your little treasures on the ground. Great idea. Not a great product.

I just started Tenkra fishing, and bought this to assist. I like the size, shape, durability and the price. Work great for my Tenkra rod.

holds 2 lines at same time, which is nice.

These things last. They hold two lines and have some space to throw a couple of flies as well. If you have a Tenkara rod, you need this.

Outstanding and simple! Can't say enough good things about this... well made, well thought out and a huge improvement over the usual spools to wrap line. I can keep a furled line on the side with the nubs, and a level line on the other. Each can be fully rigged with a fly and tippet. Add 3-4 extra kebari flies in the compartment, a combination scissors & nipper and a Mini Teton Tenkara Rod and I have a kit small enough to fit in my bicycle handlebar bag or motorcycle tank bag! My only "improvement" was to attach a wrist lanyard in the hole at the top to avoid losing it.

Seems to work really well. I loaded two lines on the spool without issue. However I haven't had a chance to get the lines wet. I like that I can put two rigs on one spool.
