The tool itself is good and works just fine. I just hate having to buy an overpriced specialty tool for one job.

Online images of the tool does not do it justice. The images give the impression the tool is made from cheap soft steel but it is made from high quality hard steel. When looking at the images I wondered how this tool can possibly work because the working end has its sharp corners rounded off. But that section is just the pilot and it the section beyond it, with the sharp corners, that actually engage the cold seat. The original design by Temptrol of how the seats can be engaged by a tool does not allow for much force to be used. So this tool does not work if the seats are seized and pipe nipple/ screw extractors will have to be used to remove the seats. Some extractors can be used to tighten the seats, others cannot and this tool will be needed to tighten the seats.

Oh my great baby Jesus! It's a product. I don't know what it does, I just order the supplies we need from amazon. I bet it's amazing! In all reality I have no clue what this thing is, but I did ask our maintenance director about it, and he said it was high quality and a worthwhile replacement.

I have a fairly good mechanic's feel, but it was impossible not to strip the valve seats on my Symmons Temptrol shower with this tool set. I subsequently purchased #8 and #6 easy outs (aka screw extractors) which worked fine. The only reason I give two stars is because even while these may not work getting the old seats OUT, you need them to tighten the new ones you put IN. So at least for that they have a use.

Big square steel bar tries to twist out brass insert by grabbing teeny-tiny notches in the brass. Maybe this works on a brand new Temptrol (but why try?). On a cold seat old enought to need replacing, the tool is virtually guaranteed to strip the tiny brass notches long before the seat budges. If you don't believe me, WWW search for "temptrol cold water seat removal," where you will find dozens of complaints, along with advice from Symmons to discard the $15 tool and use a #8 pipe easy-out instead. Save yourself the trouble and $$$ and order a #8 easy-out (for the cold) and a #6 (for the hot) instead. It'll cost a bit more upfront but you won't end up owning a useless steel bar and you *might* get a hot shower at the end of the day.

This is a unique, "fits only one brand faucet" tool but if you need one, this is the best price you'll find anywhere on the web. I would recommend any DIY homeowner or handy dandy weekend warrior jack-of-all-trades hack being careful when removing the outer seat the large tool fits because it will not give at all so too much man handling on it can and probably will cause the brass seat to strip out the little notches it locks into.

There's nothing really *wrong* with these valve seat tools, but you will find them lacking if you need to remove Temptrol valve seats that are frozen in the valve body. (If your shower valve hasn't been disassembled in a long time, this is probably the case.) Because these tools are steel and the seats are made of much softer brass, it's too easy to damage the valve seat fluting if you need to apply a lot of torque. A better design would provide some means to simultaneously apply axial pressure and high torque for a more secure feel.

Tools worked perfectly, however price is very high for what amounts to steel bar stock. If you know a plumber or someone who works at Housing Authority see if you can borrow them. They have only one use............unless you need fishing weights.........
