Not a must have, but certainly a "makes things easier." I turned a number of pens and other small things to give as gifts for Christmas this year(2019) and while I was able to do some by turning between centers, there are some pen styles that you just need to break down and buy the bushings. This was one of those times.It made the task easier as well quicker. Being able to gauge the needed final size without having to stop and grab my calipers every few minutes made turning those pens much quicker. I also believe they came out nicer then some others I had done as well more uniform across the cap and body sides. To me that was more important. I do not really like the pens where the cap is wider then the body or vice versa. They tend to have a lopsided appearance.The issue I have with bushings is perhaps the samel itmost people probably have and that is every style of pen has a "different" bushing though most of them are the same sizes. It's a racket for sure, but unless you know the inner diameter of the pen. Over time you pick those up, in the meantime it seems you wind up with a divider filled with tiny little bushings that unless you keep them totally sequestered, you'll spend a day or three figuring out which is which. Some vendors ship them in little poptop containers but if not a prescription bottle works or what I use, old film containers you got with your roll.
