Not for old school Schrader woodstoves. I mean seriously, within 3 months it buckled in the middle and the cross sections melted away. This is the best I can describe it. Yes, we live in the mountains below the snowline and use wood for heat Our last grate lasted approximate 1-/12 years through Amazon. Unfortunately, it was no longer available !

After using the same iron fire grate for over (8+) years , it finally started falling apart from the extreme heat it had to support. I researched new grates on Amazon for several days, reading many reviews about how they arrived broken, fell apart after a few uses in the fireplace, all of which made me wonder where this would end up.I took a chance on the Panacea 15424 cast iron grate, and after 10-15 excellent fires in the fireplace, I continue to be extremely pleased with the sturdy presentation it provides. We all know that not all manufactured items we purchase last as long as we expect, but occasionally we hit one that does outperform better than others. This selection I made has surpassed the expectations generated from other reviews, so my wife and I will continue to enjoy the weekend wood fires during cold and wet winter nights, and do so as a result of a simple cast iron grate.

I typically do not write reviews, but felt I needed to. In south Texas you don't have long winters, let alone many nights to have a fire. The winter of 2021 was a little different. We had a hard freeze and snow for well over a week. Shut the whole state down. We used the fireplace quite a bit last winter, not so much to warm the entire house, but just for fun and some warmth. I noticed that my current grate was giving out and had some cracks. I wasn't sure how old it was since we were only two years in the house and again, winters in south Texas aren't that bad. So i decided to but a new one (exactly like our current one) for next year, knowing that the current one had seen it's final winter. Bought the new one in January 2021 for winter of 2022. Winter ended and I cleaned the fireplace out and replaced the old grate with the new one. Fast forward to January 2022. Winter has been fairly mild. Not crazy cold like last year, but enough for some fires. I was able to make it through January and a tad into February when it was time to remove the ashes, that's when I saw the crack. I was astounded that it had cracked so quickly. My fires are not red hot all night trying to warm the whole house. I tried to return it, but the return policy was 90 days. Being that I didn't burn fires into May of 2021, I was out of the return policy period. I had to contact the seller and they told me there was nothing they could do since it was out of the return period. I learned two things; if you're going to buy this grate from this seller, do it at the beginning of your winter and the other thing is stay away from the seller, BestNest Inc. Their return policy is only 90 days. What's sad is that they're probably not the manufacturer, just a middle man who's giving this product a bad name.Update from the seller, who I owe an apology too. Please see the almost immediate reply I got from them."Amazon features a 30 day return policy. That is not a BestNest policy, but an Amazon one. We are a distributor of the product, and not the manufacturer. Due to this, we are also not able to establish a manufacturer warranty. We are sorry we couldn't be of further assistance."Seems my issue is with Amazon, not the seller. And the return window apparently was 30 days not 90. So that's even worse. Amazon told me I had to contact the seller, which as you can seeI did, yet they have nothing to do with the return policy. Must admit I'm getting dizzy from the run around. More to come...

Great setup, very sturdy and not too heavy. There are plenty of vent holes that allow the fire to breath but it keeps the coals close and contained so I can keep the logs burning. One day's use and I've noticed a huge difference compared to my old 5 bar grate setup where the large coals would always fall through too quick.

I'm fairly sure a cast iron fire grate is meant to last more than 2 months before the base melts into oblivion.

The Panacea 15424 grate appears to be as expected: a lighter-grade cast iron import that is reasonably priced. In the three weeks that we have used it, it has fared well, and is a good fit for our hearth. The front of the grate is cantilevered well ahead of the front legs which means that care should be exercised in loading it so as to avoid the potential for tipping forward. There is ample air space under the unit which can be an advantage or demerit depending on the design of a fireplace and the intended use (heat-generating or ornamental fire). My experience has shown that grates with a rear-sloping design and lower clearance produce a hotter, longer-lasting burn whereas grates like this one fire up well but require more firewood to maintain a consistent hot burn. For the money, this is a good grate for our needs. I have limited the rating to 4 stars because its longevity has not been determined yet.
