Put it on a switch, as if it's on always in hot weather it will burn out

Installed in my RZR, and it is nice being able to have the ability to plug in our tablet or phone when out on the trail. Using those GPS apps really drain your battery, and this makes it where we don't have to turn the tablet on and off to conserve the battery on long rides.

Riding our UTV in sometimes remote areas, it's nice to be able to see we're charging and not depleting the battery. Being able to charge small devices is also nice. Fits perfectly in the extra rocker switch punch out locations if you have those on your machine. (Ours is Polaris, fits great.) The single issue, for us, was finding a wire that was HOT only when running. The voltmeter will display when connected to the battery, and will obviously discharge the battery over time, so we wanted to make sure it only operated when the key was ON. There were no instructions in our package, which would have been helpful, was only issue.

I liked this one because it was set up exactly how I wanted it with the voltage color in red instead of blue. However, it’s about double the price of similar ones that are in blue. I don’t know why everyone makes the blue ones, but the red ones are hard to find. It does work good though so if you are like me and don’t want the blue LED color, get this one.

Rather than buy the cheapest product like this, I thought I would get the "brand name" Nilight which I had heard of before. Installed it with the machine in the garage and had it hooked up to an always ON circuit. Nice to check the battery voltage anytime I was in the garage. Finally got the SXS out and drove through a little rain while trailering it to the lake. This is on a machine with a full windshield. Next morning after arrival, the display was blank and no charging power. Pulled the dash and was going to see if I had power to the charger or if I had a bad connection in the wiring on the machine. As I started to wiggle the wires loose on the terminals to get a meter on the connections, the display lit up and after that, my phone indicated it was charging. I left it to add another switch to the dash. I was concerned since while the phone was charging, the battery voltage on the display dropped dramatically. As soon as the phone was disconnected, the voltage stabilized at a good level. That makes me think that the internal wiring is either very small, causing voltage drop from resistance or it is not isolated between the meter and the two chargers. Either way, short cuts must have been taken in the design. I checked it about 10 minutes later and the display was dead and phone not getting any charge. I could repeatedly make the display go blank with a wiggle on the terminal attachment. Supply wires are 18ga and I used sealed automotive connectors to match the factory Yamaha connections so supply should not be the problem.
