When light shines onto the photoelectric switch sensor, the photosensitive component inside (typically a photodiode or a photoresistor) generates an electrical signal. The intensity of this signal depends on the intensity of the light. When an object blocks the light, the intensity of light received by the photosensitive component decreases, resulting in a change in the electrical signal. The photoelectric switch detects this change in the electrical signal and triggers corresponding actions or controls.

Photoelectric switches are commonly used in automatic control systems to detect the position, distance, or presence of objects. For example, they can be employed in automatic door controls, object counting, packaging machinery, automatic lighting systems, and more.

This is a solid sensor, with good range and reliable switching. The LED light is very handy for setup! It does NOT interface smoothly with 3 or 5 Volt logic level inputs. Yes, its a pull down type sensor, but "down" isn't particularly close to ground. If you want to run it into a FIRST Robotics control system (RoboRio) or an Arduino you need to use an optocoupler to match up the signals. Also, it will NOT run on 5 Volts. 12 Volts works just fine.

I have a rodent live trap that is for racoon sized animals. I was trying to capture a small rabbit that was eating my flowers. The rodent trap trip plate was not sensitive enough for the rabbit, so I used this sensor to make it electronic.

I was able to power it, line it up and it works just great. Only drawback is I am old and reading the markings on the item was a bit hard. A nice printed sheet of directions would have been nice. But it works well, so not really a problem if your eyes are okay.
