I was trying to pull a cartridge from a valve that had been installed 20 years ago. This puller has a pretty short pull range, basically it will break the cartridge loose and typically that's all it takes. Mine had to be pulled the whole length of the cartridge. It was so tight that the nut bound up on the puller shaft. I put the tool in a vice to try and get the nut "turnable" again and snapped the arms off the T-bar. So this particular model is not super high strength. I bought a different one at the hardware store and it was a bit more robust. As a helpful hint, I used two 1" combination wrenches as spacers to increase the length of the pull. So pull as far as the tool will pull, take it off and hang a 1" box end wrench on the shaft and re-attach the tool and pull again. Add wrenches as necessary!

So the first time I tried to pull a cartridge manually years ago, I about ripped the valve body through the tub wall. Bought this tool, and the cartridge came out with only one resetting of the tool. The second one, which was the one that gave me fits before, wasn't so easy.... it STILL didn't want to let go. I was pulling so hard on the puller, it crushed the plastic indexing fingers on the valve stem. Finally shot some Kroil into the valve itself, and that helped free up the seat that became torn internally.BUT... and I wish I had done this prior, the tool comes dry which is fine... take some of the waterproof silicone lube (the stuff you use on the valve itself that comes in the little tub) and smear a little on the threads of the puller... I was sure I was either going to strip the threads on the puller, or shear the stem or the screw attaching to the stem off with the amount of force I was applying. The addition of the lube will eliminate the slip-stick behavior of the aluminum on aluminium threads. Heck, even dish soap or a little bit of bar soap would even work. All told though, this tool is worth it's weight in gold, and it saved me HOURS of screwing around.

This tool is so light that I was afraid of breaking it. It held up to the force required to pull the valve out, which was VERY significant becase the rubber pads had broken and wedged themselves inside of the valve assembly making removal nearly impossible. It works reasonably well, better that I had assumed based on its appearance. My only, minor, complaint is that the screw that secures the tool to the valve is low quality and easily damaged it tightened to much. Which can happen as the tool is rotated during the removal process. It is however very easily replaced.

In all my near quarter-of-a-century of residential plumbing experience, I've never had to have this tool for these cartridges. This one time, I did. The screw broke, but I got it out. It came out in about 50 pieces.I plumbed this house originally back in 2007. It worked only because I knew how to make it work. Joe homeowner won't be so lucky most likely.....

This tool is well made and is easy to use. It has a permanent place in my plumbing toolbox. Moen makes several different cartridges, but if you don't know which cartridge to buy, then you can't use the plastic tool that comes with the replacement. I was dealing with a cartridge that had been in place for about twenty years and had no idea which Moen model it was. The amount of corrosion would have been a difficult task for the plastic tool to remove, but this one was able to endure the amount of torque required to extract the old cartridge. It's a good tool to have on hand. The price is good and it was delivered quickly.
