The scale readout does not match the actual opening. Cannot trust.

As a former machinist, I know the difference between Fowler and Starrett. I purchased this micrometer for measuring the small diameter music wire I use for constructing model airplane landing gear, which the Fowler mic does quite well. The micrometer was already set at 0, and a few repeted openings and closings assured me that it accurately returned to zero. A quick check of two wires of known size, 0.055 and 0.032, showed the micrometer to be accurate given the tolerance of the wire. Then I measured a wire of unknown diameter, the reason for purchasing the mic, and discovered it to be 0.035. Out of curiosity I measured a glossy sheet of paper at 0.005 and a piece of celophane at 0.001. The mic returned to 0 after each neasurement. The ratcheting thimble is nice, allowing measurements without the fear of over tightening. The case leaves much to be desired. The mic rattles arround in it and the spanner will come completely out of it's slot if the case is tipped at any sort of steep angle, so keeping the case flat is pretty much a must. For a hobby mic, I'd have to say this one is the way to go. It seems accurate, I don't have a standard to check against, and it returns faithfully to zero. I'm happy with the mic and the price.

Excellent basic micrometer from Fred Fowler and company. Made in China but works well.Measured 0.1 thousandth off on several NIST traceable gauge blocks, but repeatability was consistent. For $20, this is an excellent tool value.

It came right out of the box as accurate as I need, no need to sync. The adjustments are smooth through their operating range and it returns to zero every time. The lock works as does everything else.

If you can't afford Mitutoyo, Fowler is a good alternative that is still fairly high-quality. I've tried the cheap hardware store ones and the quality just isn't there. If you're a machinist maybe you can justify the higher cost of the Mitutoyo stuff but for occasional use, the Fowler instruments seem to work very well. For this micrometer, it seems well made and comes with a good case. It has a clicker (I don't know what they're called) on the end so you can make repeatable measurements pretty easily. I usually turn it 2 clicks. As with any measurement tool you should probably have a set of gauge blocks to check the calibration periodically.
