I have other Dernord products and like them. I have nothing against this brand and manufacturer. I was happy to be able to order this through Vine because I am an avid homebrewer. As far as temperature reflection, this is extremely accurate. I tested this against a Spike brewing thermowell and against the actual liquid temp. It was accurate within .2 degrees F. That's pretty good. Same with Spike, so it definitely does its job in temp. Your typical temp probes should all fit in the hole no problem (and in fact may be an even better fit than others). The length was perfect for my needs, and clamps well. Where it fall short is, in fact, the weld (or lack thereof) where there SHOULD probably be one. To illustrate, I have attached a photo of the Spike thermowell on the left, and the Dernord on the right. If there is space for liquid to get in there, you know for a fact that it cannot/will NOT be properly cleaned out. That's what makes this a little suspect. I will keep this for emergency back-up use, but I feel much more secure with my beer with welds instead of a gap of any size. This all said... in fairness, most fermenters will have areas where you cannot definitively clean every time (racking arm comes to mind, for example). you can CIP as much as possible and scrub where you can, but it's not failproof. That's why this may have less of a chance of infection that other exposed areas. I would rate it a 3.5/5 overall because of that.

Dernord typically makes very good stuff that you can rely on in your commercial or home brewery setup however this is the first product I have had from them that was improperly constructed. This thermowell was welded on the OUTSIDE of the triclamp adapter cap leaving a very small gap between the drilled hole and the tube part of the thermowell. This now is an uncleanable product facing surface and will fail sanitary inspection.Other than this the thermowell is well constructed however because it was not constructed in a sanitary manner, I CANNOT recommend this for any application where sanitary fittings are required. Dernord could easily fix this by including a sanitary weld on BOTH sides of the tri clamp adapter cap.
