This is a Nylon bag that compresses the contents with 2 Nylon web belt straps that criss-cross over the top and bottom, and are tightened with 4 slip buckles (like you have on your backpack straps). These vertical straps are held in place by a horizontal strap a few inches above the bottom of the bag. There's a drawstring at the opening of the bag, as well. The straps cross over at the top and bottom of the bag, so you have to move them out of the way to put your items inside; this is not a problem.Once the items are inside and the drawstring is closed, pull up on the straps one by one to make the bag shorter. Keep pulling the straps in turn until it won't compress anymore.Depending on the density of the items, you'll compress it down 40 to 60%. Something like a pillow will compress more, shirts and pants (heavier, thicker clothes like denim) will compress less.It will only compress the bag to make it shorter, not thinner, because the horizontal belt that holds the vertical belts in place doesn't have a tightening buckle.

I used bags like these all through my stint with the military. These are pretty rugged and they are well put together. The stitching is strond and all the straps have enough guide channels you are not at risk of straps slipping out of position. The nylon bag itseld could have been made from a better mil material. But form, fit and function. I am well satisfied. Oh and water resistant, not as much as I would have liked.

Get what you pay for. It's not going to work miracles on your gear for compression, and the open end defeats the waterproofing. That said the construction is fine and they survived going through a gentle wash (air dried).

Not for outdoors these are not water resistant on top because it has no top flap. Completely negates the reason I purchased. I ended up using a waterproof bag. If you are storing and transporting these are fine just a cheap design.

Material is ok, not overly thick, many holes exist from the manufacturing. We only checked the largest sack, but the worry is that any holes make the product less effective over time, as the rip stop material is very difficult to tear....with holes it's much easier. We returned the item.
