I got this cable lock for my daughter to use when she's biking around on her bike. We don't live in a high crime area, but still bikes do "disappear" so I have to balance the desire to keep her bike from growing legs and the fact that a truly secure, heavy duty bike lock is less likely to get used at all.Given the specs and price point on this cable lock, I wasn't expecting a whole lot, and it lived up to that expectation. The cable, when fully stretched is just under 49", and the thickness of the cable (including the plastic coating) is just under 0.3" in diameter. Of course, because this cable is coiled, it's usable length (unless you really want to fight with it) is a good bit under 49" but still adequate for locking a bike to a bike rack, etc. Just don't expect that you'll be able to loop this through both wheels, the frame and a bike rack. Also, by my estimation, the actual inner metal cable on this is at best 3/16" in diameter, probably a bit less than that. So, a decent pair of cable/wire cutters would cut through this very easily.I wouldn't use this to secure your bike or other valuable object in a sketch area for any length of time. But I think it's fine for a short time in a respectable area where other people are around and provide a little bit of deterrent. In short, it'll help keep honest people honest in case they would otherwise be tempted by an unsecured bike, but it's not going to keep anyone from stealing the bike if they want it. That said, it is very portable--it would easily fit into a back jersey pocket, so I may even borrow this from time to time to use when I take a ride and want to be able to pop into a store just to get a drink.Note that I made the mistake assuming that the 4 digit code used to lock and unlock this cable could be set by me. Unfortunately that is not the case. It comes pre-set with a 4 digit code and you cannot change that code. The listing doesn't say one way or the other, so part of that is on me, but I think they should make that very clear in the listing.
