The vendor states clearly that CO2 cartridges are not installed. So stop at the bike shop and get some. A few dollars each. Two is a good number, especially if you're just getting started and might mess up the first one. Threaded stems only. The vendor states that the insulating sleeve fits 16g cartridges. So it does, but the 20g cartridge is pretty much the same diameter. The sleeve fits, but just doesn't cover all of the longer cartridge. (Padded cycling gloves may suffice if you're careful not to touch the cartridge with bare fingers.) Don't ignore the risk of cold; you don't want to have to jerk your hand away in the middle of the process. The cartridge is one-and-done. Don't thread the cartridge onto the chuck until you're ready to use it; the CO2 will slowly leak out. Don't count on being able to close the valve after you've used it and retain residual pressure for any length of time.CO2 will slowly leak out of a bike tire, so be prepared to pump it up with air when you get home. All that said, this chuck and a couple cartridges go into my kit, where they occupy negligible space. I hope I don't have occasion to use them very often, but they're cheap insurance when the time comes.Updated June 17, 2023Today was the day. When I first threaded the fitting onto the cartridge, I discovered the valve wasn't completely off. A good thing to check *before* attaching the fitting. I used two cartridges, all I had with me, and got my mountain bike tires hard enough to ride, but not as hard as I would have liked. When I got home and hooked up the floor pump, its pressure gauge said 40 psi.Rapid inflation doesn't give the tube a chance to spread out and conform to the inside of the tire, resulting in an off-balance tire that you can feel on a smooth surface. Next time, instead of starting from zero, I'll use my little frame pump to bring the tire up to some moderate pressure before using the CO2 cartridges. That would also help with the final achievable pressure, of course. After the freeze of using them, the cartridge and fitting take a few minutes to warm up to touch temperature, so be prepared for that.Overall, very happy with this kit.

This is my first CO2 inflator, so I'll share a couple of things I learned.First, this is a very well-made little device. All of the parts are very well machined and twist and turn and slide exactly as you would expect them to. This is also very small and light, which is great for carrying with you on a bike ride. MUCH lighter than the manual pump that I've been carrying for years.Overall, this inflator works very well, but it took me a few attempts and an extra canister of CO2 to figure it all out.Out of the box, the device is nice but didn't have any directions. Not a big deal, I've threaded a few CO2 bottles and filled a few tires. So I didn't think much of even needing directions. . . BUT I did make some incorrect assumptions.Once out of the box, screwing on the CO2 tank is very straightforward. No leaks and worked perfectly. My first incorrect assumption happened here but was not realized until later... But it is important to install the foam sleeve around the CO2 tank here. After the tank was installed, I twisted the on/off knob and a little CO2 came out, so I was pretty happy with that.My next incorrect assumption was you just pushed and held the device on the presta valve and released some pressure from the inflator. . . Well, this is not the case, this results in the inner gasket blowing out and CO2 spraying everywhere. This was completely my fault for not noticing that the tip that goes over the presta valve screws down to allow you to focus on just releasing the right amount of pressure into your tire. (side note, the inner gasket that blew out just had to be shoved back into place).Once I figured out how to attach the inflator, then turned the valve on to release some pressure, my tire filled right up... BUT, my hand got REALLY COLD! OUCH. The CO2 cartridge gets cold as it releases into your tire, the foam sleeve is included to protect your hand from that. So don't forget to install it.Overall this works great and I'm very happy with it. Directions would have been nice, but not to hard to figure out either.***unsolicited advice*** make sure to try this out and test it while you're at home, not in the middle of a ride, to make sure you have enough pressure to fill a tire. There are nice charts online that help you figure this out.

Loving the color.. hating the fact that this kit doesn’t include a CO2 bottle, not one. Just so you are aware. If you’re looking for bare-tool-only, this is the perfect listing for you. If you’re in the market for the full kit, see what other options are available bc this one specifically does not include a CO2 cartridge. If that’s not what you’re looking for, not a problem, then this is perfect for you. Personally, I can’t fully see how it functions without a CO2. Waiting to see how it goes
