Firstly, dig a hole in the soil. Secondly, insert the watering stakes into the soil gently. Fill the bottle or wine bottle with water, connect the bottle with stakes and turn upside down.
The package includes 12 watering stakes. You could choose used wine bottle or long neck plastic bottle to be compatible with the stakes.
Plant Watering Stakes self watering spikes in water before use.Don’t put too heavy bottle on the ceramic watering spikes unless you have a deep pot or it may cause the pot to tip. For small pot, you can use a smaller bottle.
Some plants may require more water than terracotta spikes can supply in dry and hot summer. You can add some water in addition to what seeps through before leaving.

Love this product. Perfect for many uses: house plants, exterior gardening, aquarium, and more! Molded near-perfectly, consistent overall quality, thick wall lining, and the size is just right.These are great for indoor plants, exterior flower pots and or vegetable gardens, and more. I actually bought these for the inside of my aquarium, providing a place for my baby fish to hide with their parents, but I ended up using them in my house plants as they were intended.For the amount of money spent, I'm happy and I'll be buying more soon.......as soon as my fishies breed again :-)

Product delivered as promised, only 1 broken piece. They are easy to use but care must be applied since they are easy to break. I live where normal Temps are upper 90's - 100's for months, they helped put a day at most between having to throughly water. I used 2 per pot or bag thinking it would help more. Because they are so small they did not work as well as the burying a bigger pot into the soil.

Not exactly as advertised. Does not fit every wine bottle. Only the narrower neck bottles will fit and it doesn’t work well.

These break easily, I broke 2 trying to install them in the garden. Handle like you would fine China. One of these was defective, the bottle wouldn't fit through the opening, so I had to chip the opening hole a bit to make it work.

I used one of these in an outdoor plant and it worked great! I dug a little hole first as I read other reviews and they can easily break if you just try to push it in the dirt. I did use a glass bottle and put it in gently and had no issues, the water drained down slowly as the plant needed it.

These are easy to use but I’ve found they need a wine bottle. A two liter pop bottle did not work. The terra cotta can break, so put it into the pot far enough.

These have been a partial answer to a very hot Texas summer and keeping potted plants watered. While wine bottles look whimsical in plants, plastic soda bottles work better and cause less breakage. Nice product, however same results from using just soda bottles with whole drilled in cap for slow p,ant irrigation.

Work great with most glass bottles, so I've been asking around for friends with blue or green wine bottles. Helps water my vegetable garden when the heat can be brutal. I've had the best yield this year and these have helped since my plants don't get dry. I do have to place one within about 6-8inches of each plant, but a regular bottle lasts a few days and a liter bottle lasts a full week. A beer bottle lasts about 2 days in our heat. I also tried the plastic ball waterers and they didn't last even a half day. The terracotta spikes are much better and more versatile capacity. Overall very pleased! Absolutely recommend!

These stakes arrived perfectly packaged in stiff foam. No breakage. Use directions were clear (and being they are made of clay need just to be handled as such. Dug a hole big enough to fit, after soaking, and placed in the hole, replaced the dirt around and then tipped a full bottle into the stake, and my plants are super happy. A relief for times of drought (we are in one now) and also for vacations. A Great product.
