Was skeptical it would increase the view on my old Canon Vixia HF800, but it does! Going to use near a table (convention/trade show) and this cheap camera barely zooms out any.. but with this lense I’m able to get more height and width into the recording, so it will serve its purpose without needing to find a new camera!

I have a Canon Vixia HF R800, which has an unnaturally narrow FOV. This lens seems to have widened the FOV back to the natural feel, without adding any noticeable distortion. Installation was easy. It's now a permanent part of my camera.I should note though that I am a complete noob to photography, and I only use the camcorder to make training videos. (So basically always filming indoors, aiming at things less than 20 feet away, including computer monitors.)

The Canon Vixia HF 800 is the best camcorder for the buck but like all of them, it lacks one feature, the ability to do a true widescreen. This handy little item gives you that and it simply screws on. All of the great features still work and now you have widescreen. What more could you ask for?

I ordered this wide angle lens via Amazon and thought I would add a review that may be of use to other potential buyers.I received an Ultimaxx 52 mm wide angle lens along with a Vivitar 43mm to 52mm adapter. Lens covers for the wide angle lens and a protective pouch were also included. All components appeared to be new. The adapter easily fit my Canon R700 video cameraThe accompanying photos are untouched (not modified in any way) print screen images from test videos that I made with my Canon R700 video camera for this review. (The images were converted to “.jpg” format from the original “.MP4” video.) The video camera was about 6 feet from the wall and looks up slightly toward the ceiling. The view was chosen to highlight vertical and horizontal lines to see what distortions the wide angle lens might introduce. There was no "zoom" used on the camera for either view. The wide angle picture shows a mild amount of curvature along the long edge of the view. (Note the boundary between the wall and the ceiling. Any wide angle lens will do this. However this “fish-eye” aberration is much less than what my old GoPro produces. If you are a purist, most video editing programs/applications have a “defish” feature that can “undistort” “fish-eye” curvature distortions. The two pictures can be used for a field of view comparison between "wide angle" and "no wide angle". The pine panels are about 3.12 inches wide. Thus counting them will give you a field of view number for the 6 foot camera distance. The camera position was the same for both pictures.Wide angle image quality is also pretty good. (Note that a “zoom” lens (on the video camera) will never produce as sharp an image as a fixed length lens due to the optics involved.) For a specific example, note the wall clock on the right edge and the table lamp in the lower left corner. There is no light flare from the lamp in the lower left corner. There were no dark corners in the raw video or on the print screen image derived from it.Overall, it’s a pretty good lens for a very reasonable price.

Do not let the reviews fool you this product gets the job done it captures a more widefootage without loosing and also improving somewhat of the quality. The only con about this wide-angle lens is that you do have to purchase a lens hood for it because the lens does get somewhat of light glare when recording but otherwise it is a great product for the price!

It's a piece of crap. I ordered it twice and both times the threads on the adaptor to the lens, that reduces the attachment size, stripped out in minutes. This is s piece of junk and not worth the effort to order it.

I'm using this with the Canon VIXIA HF R700. The main problem is that there is a half vignette on the right side when it's fully zoomed out (see picture below). You have to zoom out past it to get rid of it and by then you've lost about 35-40% of your wider shot. It's annoying to have to compromise like this. Also there's light glare that you have to re-position the camera to deal with a lot which can become a pain depending on your lighting set up (even if it's just a small lamp). If there is any significant light source in front and often the sides of the lens then you'll have to deal with glare spots which it easily picks up. This can get pretty troublesome at times. All of that said, once you've done all this (zoomed past the vignette and positioned the camera to reduce lens glare) it's not TERRIBLE and the shot is still noticeably wider than normal. And I can still move the camera back some to get the wider shot I want, but that defeats the purpose of this lens to begin with. In the end I get a slightly wider shot which isn't what I want or what was advertised. I want the fully zoomed out wider shot with no issues at all.If the glare were the only issue then I'd rate this lens a 4, but the vignette problem just can't be ignored. The only thing keeping me from rating it a 2 is the price.

i got this lens to increase POV shots..as without the lens i cannot get up to close..i can get closer now..little difference..but noticable..delivery was lightning fast..packaging was good..but fell short of 5 star rating because screen protector was folded/crushed in the box to the point if applied on a screen you would see all the creases from being folded/crushed..overall package was recieved with all included: lens, cloth, screen protector (folded/crush)..thx for the fast deliveryUPDATE 08-23-13 --->>> i have been using this lens and it causes some blurred recording while filming in sunny or bright areas..still good if going close up in not so bright areas..keep in mind this lens will not give your recordings maximum resolution..for the price and close up shots..it is relatively a good lens to use in time of need
