The adapter has 3 silver balls inside. The adapter fell apart after using.

When I first got it, the mechanism was loose but workable. Over time, just the vibration of the sander is enough to rotate the locking mechanism and it just pops off without warning.

This allowed me to connect a vacuum hose to my ancient B&D orbital sander.

It does fit my Dewalt palm sander, but the 1 1/4 hose on my Dewalt 20v vacuum is not even close. It will need something to make the hose end fit. I figure I can use an old inner tube and wrap the hose end to fit. It's not a bad piece, it just doesn't accept 1 1/4 hose as stated.
