These calipers are made from stamped steel. Not only are they NOT STAINLESS (they had been oiled by manufacturer, and magnets don't stick to stainless), they have very sharp edges from the stamping process. I spent some time filing them down as not to be cut when using them. Right out of the package the calipers are stiff enough to hold a correct measurement. If the durability is in line with manufacturing process an advertising, these might not be worth the money. We'll see.
