As a hobby, I grow several types of mushrooms. Some mushrooms grow well on oak wood. These Red Oak wood shavings are clean and perfect for this use. I also sometimes mix sawdust or shavings with grain or other substrate materials. This brings the cost down substantially. Oak works better than other wood for several mushroom varieties. It is very easy to find pine shavings and they cost much less but oak yields more mushrooms per batch than pine.

I used the wood chips for starting a wine cap mushroom bed. The chips are a good size and dry, I saw no contamination or discoloration and they smelled clean (no mustiness). I'm looking forward to harvesting mushrooms later this summer.

I can buy 25lbs oak pellets for a quarter of the price for these oak shavings. Total rip offf. It might weigh 2.5 pounds. Total junk for the price

I like the fact that it keeps moisture away from my bulbs, this is important, otherwise the go bad while being stored away for the winter.

It is shavings, not chips, which works fine for me. It's enough to fill a 5 gallon bucket completely full with some leftover. Delivery was fast.

I'm giving 3 stars because this seems to be good quality BUT I am very disappointed with the quantity. The boxes are small, which i was not suprised by but i expected them to be packed tightly, which it is not. You get very little for your money. I believe these are good, but VERY overpriced for what you get.Update: I was curious because the description says you get about 4 lbs worth. My bags did not seem that full so I just weighed one. 2.8 lbs. I already used the other one but it was filled the same as this one. Totally not worth $19. Where's my other 2.2lbs that I paid for?
